New Cat
So my sister-in-law receives a frantic e-mail about a cat about to be put down by @$$hole owners who don't want her anymore. So the kitty's waiting for the needle in a vet's office in another city.

So suddenly we're adopting a kitty. It's been a while since we kidnapped a new one, and the thought is exciting. She's at least a year old, spayed, and current on shots, and we apparently can have her for free--guess the vet is just glad not to have to put her to sleep.

Our cats and dogs (three of each are still with us) were all strays or hand-me-downs. We've never seen this new kitty, and don't even know her name (she'll probably get a new one in case her current tag has been screamed at her--she's supposedly pretty skittish). She can even have her own room as she gets to know/hiss at/fight her housemates.

In a nation that gets meaner as its economy fails, it feels good--in a way I just this moment realized I've been missing--to pledge a safe, comfortable household to a relatively helpless critter.

Two more hours, and I get on the road. Little kittums, your troubles are as over as we can make them. It's gonna be strange for a while, but you are welcome.

Pics to follow, of course. It's not just a good idea; it's the law.

1. Would a vet really put to sleep a cat that owners don't want anymore?
That is sick. I'm glad you are adopting the little girl. Looking forward to pics!

You are an O8)

3. I'm rather surprised myself.
I assume that the vet wasn't really considering euthanasia, but is graciously sheltering Kitty until she finds a home. This probably happens a lot, and I guess I feel obligated to do my part via the occasional adoption.

Perhaps the folks in the clinic are the real angels here, going out of their way, at least temporarily, for an animal that isn't sick.

9. It was thad bad!
The owner dumped the kitty at the vet, apparently having paid for the euthanasia. The techs had her on the table with the needle ready to go in, when she rolled over and looked one in the eye. The techs quickly agreed to try to find her a home, and word got to us third- or fourth-hand.

Too close.

7. Congratulations
What a great thing to do. Shame on the cat's original owners, talk about bad karma. I hope that you and your new cat will be very happy.

8. She's gorgeous...in an odd sort of way.
Edited on Fri Feb-24-06 07:21 PM by Orsino
Bold stripes, calico-orangey patches, with mittens up front and socks in back. What's almost frightening is how much she looks like a composite of four of five of our deceased cats. May have to name her Kismet, or something.

She's kinda timid, but loooooves being petted. My wife is just meeting her now.

I can't believe the techs were going to go through with it. Wow. Thank you for saving her life. I wish you many happy years together! Kismet might be just the right name.

12. No oddity - just gorgeous!
I love that you have her in the bathroom - when I got my cats they each started in the bathroom too - perfect for litterbox, food water, bed - small enough to feel secure.

Have fun! :bounce:

13. The upstairs bathroom is for animal overflow :-)
There's a room full of kitties on one side, and a dog on the other. The bathroom's most recently been used as an isolation ward for a couple of very sick cats we lost last fall. Nice to have someone healthy there.

14. She's very pretty
and is already smiling at you as you take the pictures. It won't take her long to get adjusted, I think.

I always used to give my new babies a stuffed animal to love when I isolate them. With Lily it was Leo the lion - she chewed his whiskers curly. Pad Thai had Momma cat the stuffed toy Himylan. And Charley had a bright orange fox to love.

The only digital I have is of Charley with his fox but it's sort of hidden behind him.

Now he plays with Pad Thai and the stuffed animals just have to watch!

20. Oh, she is a beauty! I want to rub her
She is absolutely beautiful! What a lucky cat to have found you guys. I can't understand folks who just say, "Okay, it's been fun but I'm tired of taking care of you so off you go."

I love the picture in the upper right-hand corner. She's showing some pretty good catitude in that pic!

:loveya: to both you and your new furbaby!

21. A brown patched tabby! Very pretty
I had a longhaired foster kitten who was also a brown patched tabby with the same ruddy markings; everyone always remarked on her beautiful coloration.

Good luck with your lovely new addition!

24. Bless you Orsino!!
People who put down animals because they don't WANT them are awaiting a lifetime of bad karma. You however, have good kitty karma coming to you!!!
The Daemon and Sebastian and crew, wholeheartedly thank you for saving Kismet (or whatever you name her, Serendipity?)

Bless you Angel! -48

18. You've done a great thing Orsino....
...she's a beauty.

As for her previous owners, the best thing I can say about them, is that they are assholes, who should be "horsewhipped"....Of course, as I said, that's the best thing I can say about them....:grr:

23. Her name is Madeleine.
My wife says it was my idea, but I remember it as hers. Anyway, it sounded right the instant it came out, so it's official. Not that Maddy is ever likely to know, or care. :)

Turns out it is a form of Magdalene, after the Mary that Jesus cleansed of evil spirits, and who became his follower. Even more appropriate than we thought.
