last year we had a pair nesting in the overhang on the back stoop
they are back this year - and building in the same nest. We never took the old nest down so you can see where new 'construction' is going on.
yes i'll get some pictures.
not sure if they are expanding to a second floor or building an entire new nest on the old one...

getting goldfinches and indigo buntings now, in addition to the usual hosts of other birds--cardinals, mockingbirds, doves, chickadees, titmice, nuthatches, wrens, sparrows, brown thrashers, towhees, red-wing blackbirds, grackles, bluebirds (in the nesting boxes), yellow-bellied sapsuckers, and other woodpeckers. We're waiting on the blue grossbeaks, catbirds, rose-breasted grossbeaks. It is wonderful to awaken to birdsong these mornings.
Edit to add: ...and one (advance scout?) hummingbird.

My cats have pigeons... and pigeons, a sparrow once in awhile, and then there's pigeons! Do you feed them? I can hear cardinals and mockingbirds, but rarely see them :(

4. Yes, the cats sit at the windows all day and look out at the birds. |
|
They do go outside, but they have been very good about leaving the birds alone. When we moved here (North GA) 1-1/2 yrs. ago, I gave them a lecture about the birds: they could catch mice and lizards, but they had to leave the birdies alone. They must have been taking notes.
But what are FIBIs? I've been a birdwatcher for some time and have never heard of them.

6. Oh, phoebes. Thanks for clearing up the mystery. |

They are very pretty birds but we haven't ever had phoebes nesting around our place. There are a pair of barn swallows eyeing our carport. They look so beautifu and graceful sitting on the powerlines, and swooping down through the garden to get insects. I went outside about 6:30 this a.m. and the birdsong symphony had already begun. It was heavenly.
I am particularly fond of mockingbirds; love to listen to them sing. When we first moved down to GA, my cats had never been around them, although we had catbirds in NC. Last summer, Oscar had a close encounter with a mockingbird, who dive-bombed him a few times. He stayed inside for a week, then ventured out very cautiously.
