Just wanted to talk a little about Spidey
I have spoken a lot about both my boys here, and so I figure most here know that I adopted them both in November of 2005.

Jake was a foster kitten since birth, so I have pretty accurate info on him.

Spidey, on the other hand, was a shelter kitty who had recently become fostered, so, his foster mom did not have very accurate info.

For instance, she told me he was between 1 and 1 1/2 years old. Vet said "no way", that he was probably closer to six months of age. Also predicted he would be a big cat.

In November, he weighed barely seven pounds. Since that time, he was sick twice, latest incident being in early January, at which time he weighed about 8 pounds.

He was also pretty nervous and shy around other people.

Well, he has completely changed. He is no longer the Spidey I adopted, and, instead, has become quite sure of himself (he fared better at the boarding place last month than did Jake), and, he has become much more mischievous than he ever was (what ever happened to the little boy I had that always listened to me?).

Best of all, he, according to my estimation, probably weighs about 12 pounds now. He feels much, much heavier. He is still growing as I notice a difference in him every few weeks. I think he may become a VERY big cat (we'll see).

I am so grateful that he has responded so much to love and good food that he barely resembles the kitty I adopted.

Here are some pics of this growing, mischievous boy:

1. Wow, what a gorgeous boy. Spidey has really
grown up. If your vet is right about his age (and it sounds like it to me), he could keep on grown for quite awhile. Sounds like you're doing all the right things for both Spidey and Jake. Thanks for the pictures. I just love those white "feathers" in his ears. My cat, Tiny, is black with white whiskers, toes and a little white bowtie.

I am sure that is do in no little amount to your love and care.

He looks like he may have Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat in him. They do get BIG, but are very loving.

His coat is sooo shiny. You are obviously doing something right!!!
He is so long and sleek.

Thanks for posting these wonderful pictures!!!

You have 2 extremely handsome and loving boys there. My guess is that they
are a reflection of the environment in which they live.

Info on Norwegians and Maine Coons..just for comparison.

4. Adopting a cat with an unknown past and trying to figure it out
Like you, I have two neutered boy cats who I adore. One was a fully grown adult when I adopted him. Although he was supposed to have been surrendered by his owner, the shelter lost the papers and couldn't tell me his history.
Since then, I've been trying to figure out his past and have come up with ideas about his prior home. My best guesses: 1) he lived with other animals because he is very socially savvy; 2) he lived with dogs because he shows affection by licking me a lot (that sandpaper tongue hurts!!); 3) he was a pet to a small child who needed company while taking a bath -- because he always walks along the tub surround when I'm in it and he just talks away to me; 4) I think he lived in a house where people said traditional prayers because he rubs up against me and purrs if I say the Hail Mary. He's such a great boy that I can't think of why anyone gave away. Perhaps there was a death in the family or someone developed an allergy.
Have you tried to figure out Spidey's past?

8. Yes, I have tried
I think he was abused given his extreme wariness and shyness at first. Also, when he heard noises in the hallway outside my apartment door, he desperately tried to see "outside" (looked in a mirror I have hanging on the hallway wall).

Now, noises don't bother him, and, he is friendly to anyone who comes into the apartment.

Like you, I can't figure out why anyone wouldn't want him...he is the sweetest thing imaginable.
