French Toast made with organic bread keeps all of our birdies happy at breakfast time. They get French Toast even if no one else is eating. Of course the Macaw, Miss Frodo, loves to drink my orange juice.

Ours died last year of pneumonia. It just about killed us. He could talk great. He even talked in sentences and held conversations. He never flew we got him so young and we kept him clipped and he walked all over the house. We had him 6 years. When he died we wanted another bird,( to quiet....and lonely) so we went a few days later to a breeder who has all kinds of birds.Arlo Guthrie, the Baby a male was 9 days old and being hand raised , we didn't bring him home til Middle March but before we got him home we got a chance to rescue another named Oliver, who it turns out is a girl. We call her Ollie They LOVE each other, i hope we don't get babies. They say every thing already. Arlo has taught Ollie to talk. Ollie wasn't talking AT ALL when we brought her home last Feb. But in the last Month has learned every thing Arlo says and they are learning the QUAKER SONG.
I'm a little Quaker green and Stout
open up mu cage and let me out
better pick me up or else I'll squak
Rub my tummy and then I'll talk
To the tune of I'm a little tea pot

yes, budgies are great. the most bang for your parrot buck, i always say. they can do anything the big parrots can do except eat all you furniture, and get you evicted with their noise.
mostly what i love is the colors. out of 50 birds, i have about 20 color combinations.
i raised most of the birds i have. but i have kindsa stopped breeding. i had an outbreak of megabacteria 2 years ago. it turned a batch of 30 hand fed babies that were ready to sell at $30 a pop (wholesale) into a $1000+ vet bill. ouch. i gave away most of the boys to people who didn't have other birds, but got stuck with most of the hens.
i may do a clutch or 2 this spring, if the vet says we are clear. but the stuff can really linger, so .....

24. it's a fungus, and
not very well understood. which is why it is still generally called megabacteria, although it is now called avian gastric yeast, or agy. nobody knows how it travels. some people have tracked it to water supply, but i suspect rodents. i fight a mighty battle against mice, but they mostly win.
i had to import meds from australia. they actually seem to have worked fine. but there is no generally recognized effective treatment.

9. I am owned by
two Blue Crown Conures, a Senegal and a Grey. They all love veggies, and eat Harrison's pellets.

My Senegal LOVES pasta, but HATES most things that are red. She will occasionally pick at a bit of red pepper, but strawberries are evil things which must be vanquished. She screams and cackles before flinging the noxious thing out of her dish.

My Grey loves to eat, to her it is all good. My conures are not all that interested in veggies. They will eat them if I stand there and feed them, but they do enjoy berries and raisins

it is good that you feed pellets, but i don't know how you can cough up the money to feed harrisons. i guess 4 birds is not gonna add up to that much.
the marketing and all just smells like a lot to hype to me. the warning to not feed certain foods, because it is so nutritious that you might cause overdosing of certain vitamins (which i have heard of happening) i dunno. how can that happen if you are not using vitamin supplementation.
i use roudybush and pretty bird. zupreem is another good brand. they all have long standing, good research programs, and are continually improving their products. good enough for me.

12. Hi
Edited on Sat Jan-15-05 12:56 PM by Stepup2
Yeah I take shit for feeding H'son to cost. I eat more oatmeal and Pnut butter to compensate :} I told one friend who eats at drive thru's weekly that she could cut back there and have the extra $$.. it is about priorities to me.

I have tried other pellets over the years and my birds would waste more than they ate of the fruity or other types I tried. My Senegal and Grey would go off them all after a bit...I went thru all the brands available til I tried this brand.

I avoid certain brands because they contain the "pro" grow type pellets which are Ground up animal byproducts, and have done research on ingred of others I choose to avoid. I operate by the maxim if I wouldn't eat it I don't feed it to my birds, and I don't eat anything I can not pronounce.

As for the rigid feeding directions, I am a vegetarian so feeding them the veggies adds no hassle to my day, none of us are big eaters which helps too. I don't follow the directions to the letter, and I do occasionally feed some seed that I order with a friend.

I can tell you my birds look better than most, and I have no behav problems etc.

btw, the BCC's and Grey are rescue birds, and they converted to this pellet after refusing to eat the others. :eyes: :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

20. yeah
i'm just so offended by things like greenwashing, and other trading on the idea of natural as the end all be all, sometimes to the exclusion of common sense. i eat processed foods, and i took chemistry in college, so i can pronounce it all. i'm a skeptic on both ends of the scale but i don't think a lot of these issues will be settled and understood in our lifetimes.
i don't necessarily trust people with a profit motive, tho. i like to use more than one brand. roudybush recently remove ethoxyquin from their foods. and i like the pretty bird african special. they are really the leaders in species specific foods. they really do a lot of research. my vet is active in the aav, and they present at conferences all the time.

I do what works for me you do what works for you.

I do quite a bit of rescue, you know all those unwanted birds out there from breeders only looking to make a buck and all, and work with several vets in the midwest.

All have shared that birds, like many dogs and cats, do better without added ingredients like dyes etc. They all agree whole foods are best way to go if you have the time, and since most people don't a pelleted diet is safest way to go.

Today, I trying something different for Murphee. "Beak Appetit" You cook it up like hot cereal, and then you let it cool. Has rice, pasta, veggies, fruits, spices, etc, and it's specifically for birds. I got the "Cinnamon Sunrise" heh heh, it smells so good! :)

16. Hi Murphee!
I have to buy some more Beak Appetit. I used to feed Grace their "Nutz for Alfredo" for breakfast. She loved it. I feed her a small-bird seed mix that was designed for parrotlets. (The breeder from whom I got Grace had somehow gotten a seed company to make it.) She also gets millet, a dried fruit & veggie mix, and a vegetable each day. Broccoli is her favorite, and she also loves cauliflower, corn, and baby peas. (It's so adorable seeing a cute little green bird eating a cute little green pea.) :-) I'm trying to find more fruit/vegs that she'll eat. She will not eat carrots; I've tried them in many different forms and she will not go near them. She tried spinach but didn't like it; won't eat peppers. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm open to them.

:hi:

baby food to encourage my birds who were unaccustomed to eating veggies.

I still make bird pasta with whole wheat spirals and toss in carrot veggie babyfood. My birds like carrot and sweet potato best, but use other veggies too.

Peas are a big favorite. My birds like fresh green beans and peas in the pod too.

21. Good site for getting Beak Appetit....
Edited on Sun Jan-16-05 08:01 PM by Darth_Kitten
www.parrotdiseperch.com

They've got some beak appetit, plus dried fruits and veggies, etc.

Murphee likes carrot, what I do is cut a long but thin piece and clip it to the side of her cage. Maybe Gracie would eat it that way? Murphee likes to nibble at carrot that way. I gave her a slice of tomato, and she nibbled away at that!

What I regularly feed her everday is her regular "cockatiel" seed/fruit/veggie mixture, topped off with a little "honey seed mixture" or "greens/grains" then top it off with a sprinkle of either dried coconut/dried fruit or dried greens/veggies (those dried mixtures you can get for birds in petstores) occasionally she gets her "honey stick" and she just loves this hot chili bird treats I buy her. :) Little porker gets a lot of variety. ;)

Of course, in addition to this, it's fresh veggies like broccoli, corn, carrot, green pepper, I'm still looking for other goodies to give her. She hasn't warmed up to fresh grapes yet, still a little scary. (though she loves raisons and dried fruit) Sometimes she will get a little sliver of meat to knaw at. I want to work at introducing her to pasta and rice "dishes". (grains, and other good things!) That's why I tried the Beak Appetit, but I have to admit, my first batch was rather sticky!!
)At eggtime :) I make her a hardboiled egg with shell.

(I try to give her as much variety as I can, and try to give her the best. :) Still learning about birds and what they need. :) )

I find that if I look like I'm enjoying something, Murphee will take an interest.

one of my friends was speaking of her at dinner the other night after we told them of some of the things the Quakers do. They had heard something on a radio program that she was a guest on and was talking about how birds seemed to know things we hadn't taught them, things that they picked up on their own. I guess I will have to find her book Sounds like great reading. Thanks

43. I read it in Temple Grandin's book
Animals in Translation, but here's an exerpt, in which Alex pre-emptively shows he can also spell familiar words he has not been taught to read yet:

Thus we are trying to get him to sound out refrigerator letters, the same way one would train children on phonics. We were doing demos at the Media Lab for our corporate sponsors; we had a very small amount of time scheduled and the visitors wanted to see Alex work. So we put a number of differently colored letters on the tray that we use, put the tray in front of Alex, and asked, "Alex, what sound is blue?" He answers, "Ssss." It was an "s", so we say "Good birdie" and he replies, "Want a nut."

Well, I don't want him sitting there using our limited amount of time to eat a nut, so I tell him to wait, and I ask, "What sound is green?" Alex answers, "Ssshh." He's right, it's "sh," and we go through the routine again: "Good parrot." "Want a nut." "Alex, wait. What sound is orange?" "ch." "Good bird!" "Want a nut." We're going on and on and Alex is clearly getting more and more frustrated. He finally gets very slitty-eyed and he looks at me and states, "Want a nut. Nnn, uh, tuh."

Not only could you imagine him thinking, "Hey, stupid, do I have to spell it for you?" but the point was that he had leaped over where we were and had begun sounding out the letters of the words for us. This was in a sense his way of saying to us, "I know where you're headed! Let's get on with it," which gave us the feeling that we were on the right track with what we were doing. --Irene Pepperberg

33. Bird toys from great folks
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 10:33 PM by GregD
The owners of www.wranglersroost.com moved to Michigan from California, and are genuine good folks politically and otherwise.

All their toys are hand made, and they emphasize the use of safe materials to protect birdie toes.

On edit - my point for mentioning that they moved from CA (where I live) is that after building their site I had a chance to stay with them a couple times, and get to know them personally. These are very blue folks that are genuinely concerned about healthy toys.

44. My African Grey
Those who don't know, greys tend to growl at things they are afraid of. It is a low growl and can be amusing to hear...although not to the bird.
I was running a sweeper with my grey on my shoulder when I heard the familiar...grrrrrrr.....grrrrrrrrr......
Realizing that it was the bird, I stopped and tried to show the sweeper to her. She responded with GRRRRRRRRRRRRR, even louder.
The next day, I decided I would show my daughter how the bird was afraid of the sweeper.
This time, my daughter held it. Grrrrr, growled my grey. I decided to pretend I was also afraid of it (which I now regret).
My precious grey let out the biggest human-like shreik you have ever heard. She just opened her beak and screamed like a child terrified beyond her wildest dreams.
I had NO idea they could scream and sound so human-like.
I promise not to EVER do that to her again.
What at first was amusing, turned into terror for my baby.
Bad mommy!

64. Budgies Are Definitely Smart, But Not As Smart As That Guy Claims
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 10:14 AM by Beetwasher
Like grey parrots, I would even believe they have some cognitive language abilities, and I even think my first budgie showed some signs of this, but I do think most of it IS mimicry. That guy IS a whacko. He's obviously a fundie and is reading WAAAAAAY more into what those birds are saying. Victor predicted the future and spoke to god??? LMAO!!!

65. I think Victor talks about "God"
because his owner talks about "God" so much!

However, I don't think the video is doctored--I can see Victor's syrinx moving as he talks, and it's completely believable.

I think Victor probably understands some of what he's saying, especially about Betty and about his toy, but concepts like "God" are probably just things he knows will get his owner excited.

Gideon is pretty good at speaking cognitively--he labels things, calls kids over to him by saying "Hi kids," and occasionally comes out with gems like saying, "I throw!" just before tossing my books off the desk. He can even tell me when I'm going to panic and when my blood sugar is low. But he doesn't predict the future.

76. Yup! That's Probably Correct!
The owner talks about god and gets excited, the bird likes seeing the owner happy and excited so the bird says god too, the owner reacts to the bird saying god and gets excited, the bird likes that etc...

That's cute about Gideon! Animals are very sensitive to their emotional states, so it's not surprising he can pick up your low blood sugar/panic attacks. He's probably very good at picking up on non-verbal cues, body language and probably even scent! When he starts predicting the future, let us know! ;-)

105. Budgies can develop extensive vocabularies.
In fact, until recently, a budgie was in the Guinness Book of World records as having the largest vocabulary. I don't know which species holds the record now.

Just because they're small doesn't mean they're less intelligent than the larger parrots. The brain to body ratio is similar. I have no doubt that they have some cognitive language abilities. But a lot of is simple mimicry. :)

However, budgies don't talk to god or predict the future...LOL! :)

106. I had a budgie with a vocabulary of around 100 words.
And I didn't even specifically teach her to talk. I had a crazy schedule and I know birds like routine, so I made a habit of repeating the same things to her in particular situations throughout the day. She picked the words up on her own. She was also the sweetest bird I've ever known.

Frodo was playing and fell, yesterday. She broke her lower beak and I spent today cooking scrambled eggs and sweet-potatoes for her. She can't chew. So I'm dropping small soft foods into her mouth much like a mother bird feeds her babies. The break will grow back and she will manage to get it level again but for now - it's sore and I'm glad that I do have the time to hand feed her again.

Beak injuries really hurt. My Amazon had a bad response to a beak trimming once and could eat only soft foods for several days. I think the beak is very sensitive because they use it and their wonderful tongues to touch everything.

60. Budgies and a finch
Used to be screeching all day and night because one bird was totally psychotic. It would attack other birds (or they'd attack him) but his favourite thing was to leap off the top pirch and crash headfirst into the floor.

I think he did it one too many times because he died last month.

It's been relatively peaceful ever since.

Oddly enough, she has no smell! It is very strange, but it is true. On occasion, there is a lite odor, but usually she is smell-free. It may be the breed. She has bonded very closely with my partner, to the point that she will try to bite me when she is perched on his shoulder and I try to kiss him! That's the only real issue. :)

87. I have four.
Two cockatiels. The oldest Montana, I hand fed from 2 weeks old. He will be 10 years old 4/24/05. He loves to dance and his favorite song is "Johnnie B Goode" by Chuck Berry.

The little girl,Cinnamon, is 3 years. She was still quite young when I got her but was through with the baby food by then. I was babysitting her for a friend who was going to sell her because her male started biting when she got her, but I could tell she was so sweet and timid that she needed someone like me who would give her plenty of attention and make her feel very protected.

Then there's Noah, my wacky white dove. He is so funny. I could write a book about his antics. I also was babysitting him and then the people who were supposed to take him found they couldn't have him so I kept him too. That was seven years ago.

These three are so bonded to me. A lot of people don't realize that birds are as smart (or smarter) as other animals and certainly as loving and loyal.

The fourth one is a red rump parrot. A friend found him outside and could tell he didn't belong there so he worked hard at it but finally caught him. He wasn't clipped and it was obvious from the start he hadn't had any good interaction with humans before.

The friend brought him to me and I didn't know what kind of bird he was until I took him to my vet for a check -up. He comes from Australia as do the Budgies and Cockatiels. He only weighs three ounces. He is absolutely beautiful. Every color of the rainbow and iridescent.
I couldn't find his owners but all the better for him because I've had him for almost two years and he's come such a long way. Before, he was terrified of humans, but now he will go on my finger and he loves his relationship with us, the first real family I think he ever had.

My goodness. I've gone on and on.lol I just love these little guys so much!

little birdies. They have and show all the feelings humans do.

They are even protective over me. One time I was having a bad migraine and my daughter was giving me a neck massage and one of my little budgies started dive-bombing her thinking she was hurting me.

Another time I was saying good-bye to my friend after a visit and we hugged and when my dove saw that he flew onto her arm and poked her.lol. He saw it as a threat to me.

He's bonded to my stepdaughter and my husband's bald head. The perfect pet for her; she's never had a pet last for more than a year or two (she's been living at her mom's until recently and her mom got bored with pets fairly regularly and would give them away), he's only about 5 years old and should have about another good 15 - 20 years to him. She's been wanting a critter that can be "hers" that will survive for a length of time.
