Does anyone have any experience in sending dogs on planes? |
|
My friend is sending his dog overseas on Northwest airlines. Does anyone know if they are good for this? I just don't want the dog (Lola) to be put in an unpressurized cabin.
Thanks

1. What breed is the dog? |
|
Some breeds-like pugs, boxers, and bulldogs-should avoid plane trips completely. Most airlines will list their pet transport procedures on the Internet. You can also contact show breeders to ask their advice.
I've shipped my cats via Delta twice with no problems. It's good to give them some holistic calming sprays or pills before hand, though. Some vets recommend tranquilizers; it depends on how high strung your pet is.

...she looks like a mix between a Britney spaniel and a Pointer. She's also very hyper.

2. Rescue Remedy helps the stress |
|
We took our cats in the cabin on United Airlines when we moved to Germany. Most airlines post their regulations online. Good luck to your friend, it's kinda stressful for parents and furkids of all species. :(

3. Rescue Remedy is Wonderful |
|
I have three dogs, two of who are scared of thunder, the third feels the need to bark at it. TG for Rescue Remedy or we would never have made it through our hurricane season this year.
I've also used Rescue Remedy when flying with my dogs in the cabin. I used to be involved in dog rescue and know of several dogs (including one of my own) who have been successfully transported by Delta. I have no experience with other airlines though.

6. Speak to the captain when boarding... |
|
Find out the airlines specific policies first.
Check with the vet about medicating, I've been told not to medicate them but I can't remember why.
Be sure they are wearing a buckle collar (not a choke chain collar) with ID tags securely attached.
Freeze some water in an old butter tub or tupperware, to leave in their crate while travelling ... it will melt slowly, and they will have water. If you leave a water bowl in the crate it will just spill.
Finally, when boarding the plane, ask to speak to the captain and tell them directly that your beloved pet is in the cargo hold.

7. As long as it's not going to be |
|
in the cargo hold, which is not pressurized, it should be ok. But a little Rescue Remedy wouldn't hurt.

Cabins are "supposed" to be pressurized, but sometimes are not..
If at all possible, please do not fly living creatures as cargo:cry:
I have heard too many horror stories.. I am sure that most do fine, but when it happens to your sweet pet, it's 100% Horrible..
