Pomeranians and cats?
My pet sitter is trying to find a home for a favorite client of hers. a little pomeranian named Bernie whose owners can no longer keep him because he snaps at their baby (jealously issues). I haven't had a dog in years, and I've always prefered large breeds to smaller ones, but I'm thinking of giving Bernie a "test run" in my home with my three cats. Mom mom has two cats who adore her roommate's sheltie; they chase, play and cuddle together. It's just adorable! But not all breeds tolerate cats, and not all cats tolerate dogs. I've always loved huskies, but I've been warned not to bring one into a cat filled home. Does anyone have experience with pomeranians and cats?

1. My older dog is a Pom
I haven't had a cat in my own home in decades, but when my Pom was a pup I cat-sat for a while, and that seemed to make him well-inclined toward cats forever after. If we meet cats outdoors, he always greets them with friendly interest. If the dog you're considering hasn't had that early experience, it may be a little different, but I haven't found Poms to be aggressive, in general. They can be feisty and dominant with other dogs, fearless, but not snappish. Introduce them slowly, and see how they do....

2. Had a pomeranian, the cats were bigger than he was
and delighted in beating him up/intimidating him at every turn at first. Nothing fatal, one of my cats was horribly jealous and she didn't like the pom.

Lanche (short for 'Avalanche') was actually very nice to the cats and tried to 'make friends' - this worked with Vincent, who is quite mellow & agreeable, but not with her royal highness, Shorty. So poor Lanche had to make sure to avoid her.

I think it just depends on the personalities of the animals involved. If your mom's cats are already predisposed to get along with dogs, it might go over well. I think poms for the most part get along with cats.

3. Two of my cats are very large
one is a MASSIVE Maine Coon, but he's a real wimp. The cats always make "let's play!" noises at the raccoons on the back porch, so I don't think that they have problems with other species. I'm told that the pom is the size of my smallest cat, which means that he's half the size of the other two!

4. My pommie loves cats.
It took a little getting used to at first, but when I brought a cat in they got to be good friends. Poms are very playful. She and the cat just loved chasing each other all over the house. I think my little girl enjoyed having a friend about her own size to play with.

5. That's good to know
one of the reasons I was open to the adoption in the first place is because two of my kitties are young (one year), and are SO playful that it's hard to get my work done sometimes. They both have particular "let's play"! sounds that they make, and it can be like chinese water torture after a while. The smallest one is downright hyper, and see could really use a playmate to chase all over the house. We'll see!

6. Our pom likes cats better than other dogs
and she gets along just fine with our two house rabbits. However, a pom that has jealousy issues might not do so well with other animals. Then again, maybe it's just the baby's crying that annoys the pom.....

7. That is such an adorable photo!
Well, I went to see the pom tonight. At first I kind of cringed; the house I pulled up to was a huge mansion in one of the wealthiest sections of town. "Certainly the people are repugs" I thought, but the more I spoke to the young woman (Jessica) who owned the dog, the more I began to believe that she may be one of us (though it was too soon to ask). Stereotyping is dangerous indeed! Anyway; Jessica was fighting tears at the thought of giving up her fur baby, and the little pom obviously adored her and his playmates; a tiny Chihuahua and a huge husky/ malamute mix. It was breaking my heart! I decided to offer to take him away for clicker training at my home instead (he'll come home Sunday), with the hopes of giving him back to his family in the future. I hope I'm up to the task; these people have such tender hearts that it just breaks mine to see them so distraught!

8. That is so sad! I hope you can help them.
Bless your heart for doing what you're doing to help them. I just hope you don't get too attached in the process...
