My new Grey
Two years ago I bought a house and decided to adopt a greyhound. I started looking about 6 weeks before we were due to close. There are quite a few greyhound adoption centers around MA and NH, so I had many to choose from. I found a beautiful, sweet girl, and was ready to take her when I found out my closing was going to pushed out a month, so I couldn't take her..my landlord wouldn't allow it. I asked the kennel director if she could hold her..she couldn't, which I understood. I did lose out on her and went on to find another grey who has turned out to be a wonderful dog.

I check out the adoption websites quite often, and the other night I saw my girl, she had been bounced back to the kennel, her owners are moving and can't take her.

I went to see her today, with my current dog to see if they got along, which they did. I'll be picking her up on Wednesday...this is a picture of her from the kennel website. She's a 6 y.o. named Folley.

4. Emma Kate
We adopted her 10 years ago and she is now 12. She is wonderful with all the other animals and so far her health is great. This is her web site.

16. We rescued a brindle just like her
Unfortunately, ours had a serious seizure disorder as a result of her mistreatment as a race dog..she was beautiful but not very smart...she lived to be about 11.

10. Congratulations on chipping!
You know - the old "once you have one greyhound you can't just have one". I've got two myself, a wonderful red brindle male named Sam and a black and white female named Hex. The very best of luck to you with her, and thank you for taking her in. She is lovely.

11. That will be my next adoption
When that awful time comes and that huge hole in my heart appears. You know when one of my fur babies goes to that great rainbow bridge dog house :-( Hopefully that should be many more years in the future.

But I have decided that a greyhound or two in the family will be next. I've been told they are 35 mile an hour couch potatoes. But when they go out they do love to GOooooooooooooooooooooo:-)

She is beautiful. So glad she found a happy loving home.

Are they already spayed and neutered when you adopt them?
I hope:thumbsup:

13. They are couch potatoes
All adoption groups spay or neuter, most do a dental and include shots in the adoptions fee. In this area (New England) the fee is $200.00. I don't know what the situation is where you are, but here in MA you have the option of adopting from a group or directly from the race track. If the adoption is from the track, the dog is free, but you are responsible for spaying, etc.

Greyhounds make wonderful pets. They're very very lazy dogs, and are mostly easy keepers.

15. I haven't seriously looked into it yet
The three dogs I have now their ages are 7, 6, and 5 years, so barring any unforeseen accidents or illness they should have many more happy years ahead of them. I'm in NW Iowa BTW.

These adoption groups get many of these greys from dog-tracks already don't they? Working with them to prepare them for a different life off the track? Don't know if that's all correct but that's my basic understanding and very limited knowledge of greyhound adoption. If that's basically how it works that's the route I would prefer to go and pay any adoption fees versus a free dog fresh off the circuit that hasn't been rehabbed into a vastly different style of life. Paying for spaying/neutering is never a problem or an issue with me. All my pets get fixed whether they like it or not ;-) I just like to know ahead of time if it's part of the adoption and already taken care of I guess. I'm such a stickler for spay/neutering to reduce the pet population and reducing the needless deaths and suffering of animals.

I wish greyhound racing would just disappear all together anyway. But it won't I'm afraid :-(

So as long as it's a life saved from an otherwise certain death sentence, that's what matters to me :-)

14. Good for you! I'm glad that their racing days are over and
they can look fwd to many happy years with you and each other.

F'ing greyhound racing...cruel, barbaric "sport" it is.
