Catnip!
Just how stoned are we getting our cats?

I love- I should say they love - Cosmic Catnip.

I have one cat who rolls in it so she gets all agitated and crazy, and one who eats it. She gets all mellow and sleepy.

1. My cat gets edgy when I give her catnip.
She looks around constantly and gets all freaked out. She still loves the stuff, though.

2. Grow your own if you can
I grow enough for my two cats plus all the other cats I know. It's very easy to grow. Pick it, let it dry, pick all the dry leaves off the stems, then run it through the food processor. This way you're sure it's organic, and reasonably fresh. They especially like it when I save some of the dried seed heads for them. My kitties much prefer what I grow to anything bought in the store.

3. My Ivan is a major nip-head...(pics)

Here he is holding up the wall unit after a little 'nip..

You can see more photos of his state of being nipped here:
http://www.vultureviews.net/posting/ivannip/index.htm

Someone once sent us some catnip from Alaska. I don't know why it was so strong, but they not only went for the nip, they decimated the packaging it came in!

Of my 5 cats, Ivan gets zonked immediately, 2 just get mellow, one gets even more aggressive than normal (and normal is bad enuff) and one has no interest in it at all!

4. THE BOOGY MAT!
My Oberon losses it on the mat too. Here he is, totally stoned, sucking on a nip filled skunk toy:

And guarding it possessively:

Ah, the power of a nip filled boogy mat!

5. Oberon has got to be one of my favorite cats.
He looks like he knows exactly how gorgeous he is and takes advantage of it every chance he gets. He seems to enjoy posing for pictures.

12. Awww. Thanks Zanana!
He only likes posing for photos because he just sucks up any kind of attention. He is just a needy mama's boy, poor thing. He even wakes me up in the middle of the night to get a snuggle (and goes right out of his mind if I close the bedroom door on him)! I don't know how I manage it, but I've always had at least one pet who was in constant need of reassurance, and of my current three it's Oberon!

14. That's a Maine Coon for you!
Oberon seems to be a lot like my Sylvester was: a sucker for attention, even in the middle of the night (early morning).

Sylvester used to jump on my lap while I was reading the paper; try to walk on the keyboard while I was on the computer; you name it--he was such a big baby!!! I miss him, and am still grieving over him :(

15. Lol! I didn't know they were ALL like that!
"big baby" is what I call Obie all the time. And having a cat that size leap into your lap can be a bit painful! But you'll forgive them anything.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my beloved half Turkish Angora Peewee last year, and I'm still heartsick over him. Have you considered getting another one? There are many up for adoption at www.petfinder.com. Oberon's breeder also has "pet quality" kittens like him for sale from time to time at www.heartshaven.net It really helped me and my remaining cat to have some new fur kids to lavish with love and affection.

6. Your Ivan looks just like a cat we used to have, Shadow
I'm assuming he's a Russian Blue. Well Shadow was a trailer park cat that my brother rescued as a young kitten. He looked just like a Russian Blue. He was one of the nicest cats you could ever have. He died of old age two years ago.

7. Yes, he is a Russian Blue..
I have 2 of them, Ivan and his littermate Yuri. They are excellent cats. One is usually on my lap (Yuri, as I type.) They are very affectionate, not at all destructive, and are so outgoing with guests that I think they were hosts in a posh restaurant in a prior life! here they are together. Ivan is on the left:

13. Such beauties!
I love the silver fur/ green eyes of the Russian blues. Apparently I was lied to about them; when I was looking for a breed to complement a Turkish Angora (a very intelligent breed that tends to be on the hyperactive side) I was told by several breeders to get either a Russian Blue, Maine Coon, or Persian to balance the Turk personality. Well, I don't like flat faces on cats, so the Persian was right out, but a book I got on cat breeds stated that Russian Blues weren't lap cats (it also said that about Maine Coons, which turned out to be totally false). It also said that RBs tended to be "aloof" and very independent ("the most catlike of cat breeds"). None of that sounds true of your two!

Oh well. I ended up with Oberon because I went to a cat show in the hopes of adopting a retired show cat (cat shows are a great place to find many kitties up for adoption through breed rescue programs) and came home with my "pet grade" Oberon because he kept reaching out for me every time I passed his cage. I'm certainly not unhappy with my choice, but I won't rule out Blues in the future!

10. Catnip theme
I want my catnip every day
You gimme catnip--leaf or spray
Just put some catnip on my toys
One whiff of catnip brings me joy
The joy of catnip can't be beat
My daily catnip is such a treat

11. We have had a pot head, a coke head and a mean drunk.
Edited on Sun Dec-05-04 03:09 AM by politicat
The catnip-mean drunk died in April. She got belligerent when she had 'nip.

We still have the pothead and the coke head. The pot head gets spacy and quiet and mellow, eats a lot and then sleeps or stares at the sponged walls.

The cokehead, normally the most mellow of cats, gets paranoid that you're going to take his stash and very hyper.

It's a drug.
