My last day with my dog, Magic
If you've read my other posts, you know that Magic was in the animal hospital for the past week, with an initial diagnosis of pancreatitis. Yesterday, he had an ultrasound and other tests done, and it was discovered he had pancreatic cancer, very advanced. I brought him home yesterday afternoon, knowing he was in pain and not going to live long. So I planned to have him put to sleep today. This is how my last day with Magic went...

I tried to make sure that he was comfortable, of course, but also, that he got to do some of his favorite things. He had not been eating much all week at the vet's, but he did eat some of his favorite dog food (pedigree choice cuts -- beef -- the one that comes in the pouches). He also got a small piece of sausage from my pet sitter when she came to visit.

Friday evening, we spent outside mostly, sitting on the patio. Magic got to spend time with his friend, Scrappy the chihuahua. Although Magic was not able to play, he seemed happy to see his friend.

He had a restful night, although I caught him drinking from the toilet in the middle of the night. What the heck, it's his last night, so I let him.

In the morning, he watched the squirrels outside through the patio door. They come right up to the patio, as my neighbors above feed them in the mornings. Magic watched them, but didn't get all excited like he usually does.

My petsitter came over to spend some time with him. She also went with me to the vet's to put him to sleep. He was very happy to see her -- he was more energetic around her than he had been the previous day with me. However, he moved away from her a few times after she was petting him a while, as I guess he was not feeling good and in pain, and not wanting to be touched too much. She gave him some sausage from a McGriddle she picked up on the way to my house. He ate three small bites.

Too soon, it was time to go to the vet's. Both my petsitter, Casey, and I were crying the whole time we were there. The vet was crying too. She was so great, she talked to Magic and told him of all the friends he was going to meet in heaven. I'm an atheist, but that was really comforting to hear her say that. Naming all her previous pets that have gone on, and my cat, Nightmare, who was put to sleep 3 months ago. He passed away peacefully, with Casey and I holding him.

The vet looked over the ultrasound and tests the animal hospital ran. She said his entire pancreas was cancerous, and there was nothing she or anyone else could have done. She was very shocked, because she had been treating him all week until Friday, and said he didn't look or act that sick... just like a normal dog with a tummy ache.

Magic was absolutely the best dog I ever had. His life was way too short (5 years), but the last 1 1/2 years I had him after I adopted hi from the Humane Society was wonderful for me and for him too, I hope.

1. Sweet Magic.... You were the love of his life, and he loved unabashedly
Edited on Sat Jun-25-05 03:34 PM by BrklynLiberal
He was so lucky to have found you and spent those last years so loved and well taken care of.
You did all the right things for him.
He will meet all those old friends on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge, where he will be young and healthy again.
He will abide forever in your heart..in that special warm spot that he has carved out for himself there.
I am so sorry for your pain. Time and tears...Those are the only things that I have found that seem to help with the hurt of this loss.
Some day you will be able to think of Magic and smile. He will always be close by.

2. I'm terribly sorry to hear that
He was a very sweet-looking dog. You gave him a good life and a merciful death, and never fear that he didn't know that.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Magic isn't in pain anymore, though, and I've got an old friend up in doggie heaven who's probably having a grand old time with him now.

3. So sorry Bella...
I've read your threads for a couple weeks now, hoping that Magic would rally and beat this thing. I can't imagine how you found the strength to do what you knew was best for your beloved pet.

I hope in time things get better, and perhaps when the time is right Magic's spirit will move you to consider another fur kid. No one should be without them, canine or feline.

4. I have two cats... but it's just not the same
Although I love them dearly, when I had to put my 15 year old cat to sleep 3 months ago, that I had had for 14 years, it wasn't as hard as letting Magic go. Dogs just seem, to me, to be more of a companion. Even with the two cats, it's pretty lonely here without him. I know he's better off now, though, and as the other poster said, he's playing with lots of friends, including Babe, the St. Bernard, my first dog, and Bandit, the border collie, my second dog, both of whom passed away 10-20 years ago.

5. Oh my heart goes out to you!!!
My husband and I have an 11 year old husky that weighs over 100 lbs....Our vet says every day is a bonus.

Your dog is so beautiful...!!! and I know you will miss him...They become "part of our heart"....but that's the finest love there is.

I will miss our husky soon...but the love of this animal I think will be with us for a very very long time.

Bless you and my thoughts are with you!

7. Thank you for your post....
I am entering the same situation with my cat, Tuffie.
Six months ago she was operated on for a malignant mammary tumor. The vet had said at that time that the prognosis was not good. Just three days ago, Tuffie began acting differently. She was growling often and began throwing up alot. The ultrasound done this morning showed she had thickening of the small intestine, and her liver enzymes were sky high.
The vet said that we probably only have a couple of weeks with her.
Your post about your wonderful dog moved me.
I had wondered how to handle her last days, and I now feel better how to do it as a result of your sharing of your experience.
Thank you so much for sharing your story.

9. I'm so sorry Bella
but glad that he found you when he did. it was wonderful of you to rescue a dog who was no longer a puppy, and you let him know that he was truly loved. It sounds like you had a wonderful life together for the time that you had one another. You were Magic's hero, right to the end.

Rest in peace Magic. My Magic Maggie was there to greet you at Rainbow Bridge. It is never easy for us to lose our beloved pets, especially when it is too soon.

13. Thanks everyone, for your kind words
I am doing a little better tonight. Still a bit weepy, but doing OK basically. A good friend I haven't seen in a long time came to visit this evening, and that helped. Your sincere thoughts and warm words have helped alot too. I'm going to miss Magic for a long time, but at least I know I did the right thing for him. He was obviously in pain on Saturday.

This morning his chihuahua buddy, Scrappy, came to the patio door like he does every Saturday and Sunday morning, looking for Magic to come out and play. He stayed for about 10 minutes, then looked up at me sadly, and walked away. I think he knows Magic is gone for good. At least they had that last time together on Friday.

Magic touched many people -- everyone who met him instantly fell in love with him. He will be sorely missed.

You and Magic were lucky to have found each other. I'm sure Magic knew how much you loved him. As a volunteer for an animal rescue group I can honestly say that I wish the world were full of people like you..

You will be in my thoughts and prayers (hope that's okay).

Take care of yourself.

15. Bless you and your baby. I am in tears for both of you. What a great
thing you did giving him a home and a loving family. I truly believe that if there is a heaven, its full of cats and dogs. They are jewels given to us to sparkle for a while and then go. My baby in my sig died in March and I held him as they put him to sleep. I still cry but it gets easier to live with the pain. You never forget and you always feel the loss but it gets easier. I hug you, sweetie.

21. I am so sorry for your loss...I have tears in my eyes as I went
through the same thing two weeks ago. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do...my wife and I cried and cried.

I would like to think that your Magic is now playing with my dog, Cody...and they are healthy and happy wherever they are.

On another note -- we brought a dog home from the shelter on Friday...I miss Cody so much but not having a dog around the house made it worse for me. We adopted a great dog named Buddy who needed a good home and we are happy he is with us.

Again, my thoughts are with you in your time of sorrow.

I had soo hoped he was going to recover. It's so hard to lose a valued companion. I know your heart is broken right now but please remember when you are ready there are many others at the humane society waiting for all the love you have to offer. Take care.
