Ft Myers Fl: looking to adopt small (10 lb?), 1 yr old or so dog

This is my step mom, and she is a tiny little thing herself, so unable to handle a larger dog. She has a lovely cat, but always wanted a dog and had to wait until my dad died (he did not like dogs).
She has been contacting a rescue group down there almost everyday to check and so far nothing has come about.
She is retired and will dote on this little creature. She has a large home and nice yard believe me, it would receive lots and lots of love.
Two breeds she mentioned were poodle and chihuahua. She is not picky, though.
