Rescuing pets could save people

Thousands of people apparently have refused to evacuate New Orleans. A
lot
of
them reportedly have been unwilling to leave pets behind.

A news report Saturday said the military had begun providing cages to
pet
owners
so they could evacuate with their animals.

"We got the capacity, and it seemed like the right thing to do," Army
Lt.
Gen.
Russell Honore said.

2. Gen Honore rocks. This came up on "Fresh Air" yesterday
Terry asked the guest, who was doing pet rescues, what she thinks of those who believe people should be rescued first.

She said "by doing what we're doing, we ALLOW people who won't leave without their animals to BE rescued."

3. so easy to do
just put out the call, let breeders, rescuers, etc with a dog trailers, cages, etc, follow the evacuation buses. people in the bus, pets in the vans, everybody out. pet people are very well networked, and 99.9999% have hearts of gold. piece of cake, people.

4. I totally agree...
I haven't met too many (if any!) pet people who weren't the best people you'll ever meet in your life!

In this country in the year 2005, this shouldn't even be an issue of people being forced to choose between abandoning their pets and risking their lives because they will not leave them.
