I need some tips from you ! |
|
My Grandson Aidan has been sick this past week. He has stopped drinking ANYTHING! No milk, no juice no water!! Daughter called the Ped. yesterday and he suggested popsicles and watermelon. Aidan likes NEITHER! He's eating, and they've been able to get him to eat some grapes, so it's not a sore thoat that's causing this. Can't get pedialite into him, HE WON'T DRINK! Not peeing much, but still has plenty of tears, and runny nose. He has no fever so we're at our wit's end. I told her to take him to the Dr. or ER if this continues today. Poor little man is miserable. I worry about dehydration and kidney problems as a result. I told her I'd put it out there to you guys for suggestions and prayers. Thanks from a worried Nana ! JA

How old is he? Definitely sounds like he needs to be seen if this keeps up.

3. Thanks, I'll pass that along. |

He was three in August. He was supposed to start pre K on Friday, and of course he missed his "first day of school" with his buds from his playgroup.

All fruits have lots of water in them so try some other ones if he doesn't like watermelon. BTW, how old is he?

4. I told my daughter last night... |
|
that if he's eating, give him some soup, if you have to spoon feed him yourself. He's been used to finger food for so long, he barely ever uses utensils. She's been sick too, as well as her hubby, and hasn't been able to get out to the store. Says she has no soup in the house. I'm going to call her and offer to drop some off today, but I can't get near them with my COPD, I don't need to catch what ever they have! Thanks for the tips!, and I'll keep ya posted.

5. Dehydration is a very real risk for the little ones |
|
MG Jr. ended up in the ER two summers ago for it after a stomach bug decided to last longer in him than in the rest of the family. I second the vote for crushed ice; kids find it fun to eat by the teaspoon (or even with fingers). Is he throwing up at all? That increases the risk of dehydration dramatically. But even if he isn't, refusing to drink could be a sign of any number of things; the first that came to mind just now was swollen glands that would make swallowing difficult but not necessarily feel like a "sore throat". It is odd that he is eating but not drinking. I'd also vote for a visit to the doctor on Monday no matter what. In the meantime, sending light for the little guy--and his worried Nana!

I knew you'd chime in with your motherly instinct! I think you may be right about the swollen glands. His Daddy just caught it today, and he says his throat is on fire! You would think Aidan would rather drink, than eat? What's the saying, "feed a cold, starve a fever"? Hopefully it's just a virus and not the flu. No, he's not throwing up,just lots of mucus , and runny nose..... OK Daughter just called me, and as of this AM he's begun drinking again !!! Thank God! He'll probably have to miss the the first couple days of pre K this week too. He's supposed to go Mon. Wed. and Fri. Daughter has cabin fever...big time! HA! I know the feeling.

Glad he's starting to recover. PHEW! :D
Now that I think about it, when MG Jr. went through his two rounds of strep last spring, he never told me his throat hurt either. I even asked him, and he lied and said no (apparently he was afraid I'd take him to the doctor--THAT got him a stern lecture about lying!)
Yep, illnesses right on schedule, huh? It's like the viruses check the calendar and fire it up right after Labor Day...

I'm almost certain that he picked this up two weeks ago when they took a "mini vacation" to Boston. (long weekend) The weather was bad, and because parking is so expensive in beantown they took him on the tubes. They went to Fanuel Hall, Boston childrens museum, and Boston Aquarium. Lot's of walking, lots of people and walking around in the rain, I really expected this to happen. So many things to TOUCH and not sleeping well in a strange hotel room, it all adds up. But what are we supposed to do, isolate our kids from the world? I know...wash hands (Kirstie carries around the baby wipes in her hip pocket like a gun!) I guess it will build up his immune system, but I don't remember my kids getting sick this often when they were little!!???

When MG Jr. was in prsechool, they doused everything in bleach solution, sprayed down the tables with bleach solution (a bit much, as far as I was concerned), made the kids all line up to wash their hands first thing when they came in, after they went potty, etc., etc., etc., and did everything short of making them stand in a chemical shower once a day, and they STILL all got sick repeatedly. I don't know what the answer is, though...

10. First of all, dehydration is |
|
extremely serious, and I can't believe the pediatrician hasn't had the kid into the office. If he absolutely won't consume liquids in any form it can get bad very fast, and the only solution is IV fluids.
Secondly, not to minimize illness, but we are designed to come down with stuff, and improve our immune system that way. While sensible precautions need to be taken, getting sick is a part of life and makes us stronger as a result.

That's what we use when the bug hits.
Another suggestion.
Back in the mists of time when my brother and I were kids, we got a horrible flu and couldn't keep a darned thing down -- not even water. The old family doctor made another house call. He suggested to my mom that she cut an apple in half, and very gently scrape a teaspoon on the white area of the apple to get a little foam. Tiny sips of this foam over the next few hours saved our lives.
Make sure no pieces of apple get into it. The apple foam contains pectin, one of the ingredients of Kaopectate.
