Some Speculations on the effect of Geomagnetism on the Pineal Gland
Just recently there has been considerable interest in the effect of the earth's magnetic field (EMF) on living organisms, particularly as a direction finder (Baker, 1980, 1981; Husing, 1960). This interest seems to be spreading into much more esoteric fields, parapsychology being one of them. There are suggestions that psi ability is related to changes in magnetic field strength (e.g.Persinger, 1989). There is the suggestion that psi ability is linked with the pineal gland (Roney Dougal, 1989) - and the pineal gland is affected by geomagnetic variations as shall be detailed in this article. There are suggestions that dowsing ability is related to the EMF (Williamson, 1987). There are suggestions that UFO phenomena are linked with areas of geomagnetic anomaly (Devereux, 1982), and UFO phenomena seem to have a psi component (Roney - Dougal, 1991).
Putting all these individual pieces together an intriguing picture emerges, which suggests that the old idea of a "sixth sense" may be just that, a sensitivity to the EMF. However, this sensitivity is a subliminal perception, and so the psychological process by which we become aware of this information is in many ways similar to that by which we become aware of psi inputs (Roney - Dougal, 1987). From a practical, subjective level therefore, awareness of the EMF and awareness of psi information will manifest in very similar ways. Thus map dowsing (awareness of psi impressions) and field dowsing (awareness of electromagnetic impressions) manifest in similar ways, the dowser obtaining information from the swing of a pendulum or from rods, these being a sort of biofeedback tool informing the conscious mind of subliminal body responses. This suggests, as with my research into more traditional subliminal perceptions, that the line between sense perceptions and psi perceptions is a very fuzzy one, the one merging imperceptibly into the other.

Sacred Sites, Dreams/Visions/Psycho-active events and Geomagnetic Fields:
...The susceptibility of the human brain to the Earth's natural magnetic field had been denmonstrated by the work of Dr Robin Baker at Manchester University in the 1970s <7>. He took coach loads of blindfolded students on circuitous journeys and then stopped to let them off. When asked to point the direction of home by far the large majority were more-or-less correct. But placing small magnets on either side of the head during the journey destroys this ability.
As might be expected for semi-nomadic people who cover great distances, Australian Aborigines possess a well-developed sense of direction. Even when taken to hospital many hundreds of miles from home, they can point to 'home' through the walls of the room. Even blind Aborigines have an accurate compass sense. This orientation is inextricably linked to Aborigine language; one cannot simply be said to be lying down, a person always lays down north or falls down south, or whatever <8>.
A mechamism for this subtle compass sense was offered by Serena Roney-Dougal <9> who argued that the pineal gland at the centre of the brain (but not, technically, part of the brain) becomes calcified at puberty - and, at this time, becomes sensitive to minute changes in magnetism. The more active aspect of the pineal gland is to control the production of the hormones which regulate sleep - but these hormones are chemically similar to the active ingredients in some psychoactive plants such as the Amazonian vine species ayahuasca, which seems especially effacious in enancing precognition, clairvoyance, healing and out-of-the-body travel.
As I have speculated previously <10> the links between the magnetically-sensitive pineal gland and the brain's natural 'psychoactive' hormones open up the possibility that the journey to a sacred site may be capable of inducing altered states of consciousness. I am not thinking of the typical Mercian Mysteries field trip, where one merely jumps out of a car and strolls across a field, but a more lengthy pilgrimage paced at the body's natural rhythm of walking. This will take one through an ever-changing sequence of variations in natural geomagnetism - caused by underground water, differences in underlying rocks, even fault lines - that may in some way refresh or reactiviate the pineal's functions.
Although not necessarily connected to subtle magnetic sensitivity, other research has revealed how high voltage electricty may cause adverse mental and physical changes in some people <11>. More subtle electrical effects on the brain have been investigated in detail by Michael Persinger and, as recent TV programmes have demonstrated, he now seems capable of triggering on demand experiences which closely resemble 'alien abductions' <12>.
What we lack is any direct consciousness of these subtle effects on the brain. By its very nature the pineal gland can only 'communicate' with the brain by the most fundamental limbic processes. In a manner akin to dowsing and other psychic sensitivities, the perceptions are channelled by tenuous methods. The nett result is, at best, impressionistic and resonant rather than focussed and fine-tuned. The nearest way of expressing this in words seems to be in the mythological landscapes of the Australian 'Dreamtime', or the vestiges of 'fairy land' which still endure in our folklore.
But were the subtly-psychoactive effects of magnetism also available in more portable form? The god to which the Greek Aesculpaia were dedicated, Aesclepius, possessed a famous wand which gave the owner the power of healing. Was this, rather than the inter-twined snakes, the real power of the caduceus? <13>
In this article I have deliberately chosen to emphasise the links between magnetism and dream incubation. Clearly, seeking auspicious dreams, or 'vision questing', is an age-old and worldwide cultural phenomena. In ancient Egypt Thothmes IV, before he became pharaoh, slept near the Great Sphinx and received instructions to clear the sand from that already- ancient monument. A carved stone stela records the dream and deed. Not so far away in time and place, the Hebrew patriarch Jacob slept with his head on a stone and dreamt of a cosmic ladder reaching from Earth to heaven <14>; this is perhaps the best-known of many visionary dreams which feature in the Old Testament.
In an unbroken tradition, Bear Butte mountain in the mineral-rich Black Hills of Dakota remains a vision quest site for Plains Indians. Indians in New England appear to have chosen as 'praying villages' places in close proximity to the most significant geomagnetic anomalies <15>.

As the Earth rotates on its axis, it functions as an electro-magnet generating electrical currents in the molten metals found within its core, and an electromagnetic field on the surface which oscillates at an average frequency of 7.83 Hz, which is almost identical to the range of alpha human brainwaves. Life on earth has evolved with this background magnetic field, and creatures are accustomed to living within its presence and are able to cope with the slight fluctuations over time caused by electrical storms and the sun’s activity.
The Physicist W.O. Schumann identified this frequency in 1952, and it has become known as ‘brainwaves’ or Schumann Waves. The space agency NASA has had to build Schumann Resonators into their space shuttles in order to artificially generate this electromagnetic frequency, which is known to safeguard the health of astronauts when they are beyond the influence of the earth’s vital frequency.
Geopathic stress (GS) represents a distortion of this natural frequency by weak electromagnetic fields created by streams of water flowing underground, geological fault lines, underground caverns, and certain mineral deposits (notably coal, oil, and iron). For example, where the inner Earth's vibration of 7.83 Hz crosses a water vein 200 – 500 feet below ground, stress lines vibrating at up to 250 Hz can be created.
Man-made disturbances to the earth’s surface can give rise to further distortions, including quarries and mines; road and rail cuttings and embankments; building foundations, especially tall buildings with steel pilings; tunnels, sewers, drains, buried utility pipes and wires; as well as artificially created electromagnetic fields from overhead or underground cables and electricity-generating stations and sub-stations.
Any distortion of this 7.83 Hz level creates a stress with the potential to weaken the immune system of any mammal living above the distortion, leading to greater susceptibility to viruses, bacteria, parasites, environmental pollution, degenerative disease, and a wide range of health problems. Many dowsers use a 0 – 16 scale known as the Von Pohl scale (after its originator) to measure the strength of geopathic stress, in which 0 represents the healthy 7.83 Schumann frequency, and 16 an extremely strong locus corresponding to 250 Hz. For example, people who are sleeping on a GS locus of 9 or more (perhaps a combined score from the presence of several geopathic features) are likely to develop cancer.
..snip..
The most frequently found symptoms occurring at an early stage of exposure to geopathic stress, perhaps immediately upon moving to a new house, are sleep disturbances. The siting of a patient’s bed seems to be the most important factor, after which come favourite chair, desk, room in which most working time is spent, and so forth.
Pathological symptoms can include restlessness, difficulty in getting to sleep, excessive dreaming, excessively heavy sleep and sleep requirements, waking unrefreshed, cold or restless feet and legs in bed, asthma and respiratory difficulties at night, fatigue and lethargy, unexplained mood changes, aggression and depression.
Patients often wake up at an odd angle in bed, perhaps on the edge of the bed as far as possible from the centre of stress, while children might sleep-walk. Cats tend to prefer sleeping over a stress hot-spot, other things like warmth being equal; dogs and most other mammals prefer to avoid them. It is interesting to see the mechanism whereby healthy humans are naturally sensitive to avoiding such stressed areas, while humans on a disease cycle naturally gravitate in spite themselves to sleeping in beds whose geography enhances their pathological tendency (in much the same way that patients displaying the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome of Spleen Yang deficiency love bananas, and therefore further increase the Cold Phlegm in their system. The two broad categories of geopathic disturbance are yin - the discharging field, and yang - the charging field, ranging from the geomagnetic baseline of 65,000 nano-Tesla by up to 8,000 nT either way.
The yin fields are associated with underground water flows, underground caverns and rock hollows, the running water causing a decrease in the intensity of the rocks’ geomagnetic field strong enough to influence living organisms on the surface. Where two underground streams cross the effect is enhanced...cont'd
