January offers many opportunities for awareness and change of direction. The mental circuit Mercury is still reviewing, revising and releasing old ideas and limiting beliefs. On 1/15 with a New Moon and a powerful Solar Eclipse, Mercury begins its move forward, having challenged our minds and machines for the previous three weeks. Mercury is moving through the sign Capricorn, making our business goals the top priority. On 2/3 Mercury is back in the position it occupied when it began its backwards motion. Where possible, postpone large decisions till this time, as doubt should lessen and be replaced with clarity. During January Mercury makes only one pattern, a joining with Venus on 1/5. This is a great time for social activities and pleasant activities in general.

Another major shift occurs on 1/13, as Saturn slows down in Libra and rests till May 30. Generally speaking, this reduces the pressure many people have felt in their relationship life, particularly those with planets in Libra, Capricorn and Aries. This gives us all time to review our business relationships and evaluate our needs more realistically.

On 1/17 Jupiter ends its year long journey through Aquarius and moves into Pisces. Those with planets in Aquarius may feel a slowing down and to some it is a welcome relief. Those with planets in Pisces may feel a speeding up, an anticipation of change, and some extra optimism to make needed changes. All of us are well advised to deepen our spiritual life and use beauty and nature to invoke the transcendent function through intentional solitude. On 1/31, the second phase of the Saturn/Pluto wake up call will occur. Phase 1 occurred on 11/15, and as you may remember, this is a once every 30-year milestone in which we each revise our boundaries and desires to reflect greater authenticity and personal power. Phase 3 ends on 8/21. This redesign process is most pronounced in those with planets in Libra and Capricorn, but all of us will find ourselves changing in spite of ourselves. We had this same cycle 30 years ago, so if you are old enough to do so, review your life issues from 1980 for clues as to the flavor this will bring into your life.

Venus begins the month in Capricorn which encourages us all to get back to work, and gives people with planets in Capricorn a boost. On 1/18 Venus enters Aquarius and encourages us all to spend time with friends and groups where we feel comforted and mirrored. On 1/22 Venus and Saturn form a stabilizing pattern, which should bring more peaceful thoughts to all of us, especially for those with planets in Libra, Taurus, Aquarius and Capricorn. This harmonizing influence allows detachment and clarity of thought. On 1/27, Venus and Mars light each other up, so this is definitely not the day, or night, to hide out at home. Sparks may fly.

Mars remains in Leo, relaxing and rejuvenating our creative impulses. For many this stimulates repressed aggression to come to the surface, so monitor yourself and avoid those with passive/aggressive tendencies. This is definitely a time for all of us to learn conflict resolution skills and improve our anger management techniques.

With most of the planets in earth and air signs, the rhythm of life is more rational and realistic. For some of us this is a relief, for others intolerable. It seems to me that January is a time of realism balanced with true creativity.
