Hey friends, anyone ever taken Prednisone?
I had a one-week course of Prednisone to get me through a concert I was singing (had severe laryngitis)

About three days after my last dose, I developed a rash in my underarms, on my elbows and knees, and extending down my forearms. It's not driving me CRAZY with itching, just red and inflamed and is painful when I DO scratch it.

I am convinced that it has something to do with the Prednisone, as that's the only thing different in my life in the past few weeks, but every health professional I've mentioned this to kind of poo-poos the idea. Anyone else ever have anything like this?

1. Yes, it is a steroid
When my md gave it to me he warned me that it could cause mood shifts. What he didn't tell me is that if you are diabetic, your bloodsugars will skyrocket. That I learned on my own. I've never heard of a rash though.

2. I do not know the effects on a human
but I had a dog and he was on pred for a couple of years to combat his seizures. All I know is that it is a powerful steroid.

I looked it up on wiki and here it is:

It is part of the side effects listed.

I hope that it will go away soon.

3. There are side effects. I had to take it for a while for my asthma.
What it did to me was make me hyperactive. I did stuff I never ordinarily do like bake my own bread, make pasta, all kinds of extra work that I never ordinarily got around to doing. I never had a rash though. It could be coincidental with something else you came into contact. Some people are allergic to stage make-up. You should check it out by putting small amounts with patches on your skin of what you came into contact with during the time you were on the Prednisone that you don't use or come into contact with in your regular daily life.

5. well that makes sense, it simulates/stimulates the adrenals
so more energy is common I think...trouble sleeping, etc...

But I believe there are some serious side effects, my mom had somehting that looked like a heart episode, but it was a irritation of the esophagus/stomach acid we think..she was in the hospital for a day and that's all they could pinpoint, was the meds.
A rash in any way, especially in those areas makes me think of the lymph system and a toxic reaction ...

7. Thanks for mentioning hyperactivity
Your comment solved a mystery for my mom--she just mentioned the other day that she couldn't figure out why she was sleeping so heavily, even falling asleep on the couch while watching TV, after many many months of insomnia/middle-of-the-night wakefulness. After seeing your post, I asked her if she was taking a higher dose of Prednisone when she had insomnia than now, and she said yes (she has polymyalgia, and takes more or less depending on her sed rate).

So thanks for this bit of serendipity, Cleita--it put my mom's mind at ease to know that her sound sleeping is NORMAL, compared with her insomnia of several months ago. :hi:

4. I have had to use it in the past for eczema and allergies, and I've
had that rash, too. I take probiotics and extra Zyrtec and it usually goes away in a few days. My doctor says she thinks it's a reaction to the prednisone, but she's not sure since none of her other patients have reacted that way.

6. It is definitely from the Prednisone

I took it years ago for an MS attack and got red all over. It did itch. I believe there are two kinds, one won't make you itch. They both make you have a red rash. It will disappear if you don't take it for too long. Good luck.

Yes I forgot, the mood swings were quite significant during the rash phase.

8. Doing much better
Still pretty ugly, but not so red. Think it'll be gone in a few days. I STILL want to eat everything in sight, but I'm not sure I can keep blaming that on the steroids!
