An owl woke me this morning
I just remembered that. It was about 4 am and an hooting owl woke me and I thought I was hearing things. But as I was trying to fall back to sleep, it hooted again, several times.

I found it very odd because in all the years I've lived in this house, I've never ever heard an owl. let alone, one in my backyard.

I wonder what it said!! :)

1. You must have something in your yard that has attracted it.
Rodents yes, but also landscape that appeals to them. I have a couple that come around at certain times of the year. Sometimes they hoot to other owls on other people's properties. It's quite a symphony. For some reason or the other I don't find it a nuisance although it happens at night, sometimes all night, but it seems reassuring instead.

5. My neighbor has a garden.
It's filled with critters. (I know this because my cat loves nothing better than to capture said varmints and present their little carcasses to me as gifts. :P ) Very possible the owl could see the critters from the tree in my yard.

4. Owl Medicine is very powerful!

I would add that the silent feathers are really awesome, I have owned some owl feathers in my lifetime and they are almost furry..

the above article mentions the third eyelid...which makes me think of clearing your third eye, in order to see more information than others and be in a place of knowing about all situations...start looking at things as if you were that silent observer ;)

what a wonderful gift, i love the sound of owl hoots!

6. In my family ...
Edited on Sat Mar-27-10 02:22 PM by mntleo2
...the Odessa-Russian/Lutheran side, the appearance of an owl meant someone was close to death. Indeed the day before my grandmother died, an owl flew into my back yard. I did not know at the time it was considered a "sign". But since I lived smack dab in the middle of a city, it seemed strange I would see one. She died in November 1981. I mentioned at the funeral reception how strange it was I had seen this owl in the middle of the city and my uncle went pale. Then he explained to me what our family traditions were.

On another note, the day my dad died was the 13th of December 2007. A hummingbird came onto my porche and hovered by the sliding glass door for awhile. I knew that was not right for a hummingbird to hover there ~ much less in the dead of winter when they should have flown South ~ and that it was a sign from my dad. Within hours he was gone and tho I was not by his side with the rest of the family, I knew he came to say good-bye. I have not seen a hummingbird since tho I hear they come back in the spring and are around where I live.

On a strange note the day before my dad died. He was an alcoholic who was being horribly abused and neglected by his wife who married him for his money soon after my mom died. I was having dinner with a friend where the restaraunt was under a bridge (The Aurora Bridge in Seattle at Ivar's). I got this feeling that he was already gone. I almost heard him crowing in delite because he was finally free from the misery he had endured and could fly. I could almost see him, tickled to death (literally) that he was free, flying, swooping around, over, and under that bridge. Mauybe even knowing I was nearby, but that was not what I felt so much as that he was so happy to be free. I became overwhelemed with sorrow because I knew I would never see him again. I had to leave the table for a few minutes to gather myself up.

When he died the next day, my aunt who was his sister, said she felt he had already left his body, but that it just fought on for about 12 hours before he actually died. I had not told her of what I had felt the night before. It was about that same time I felt him flying and so free.

I just do not want to leave you with something sad, because perhaps for you the message of the owl was not for what it was for me. However sometimes those things are a "message" and it might be good to talk to an elder from your family ~ or even a neighbor, etc., ~ who may know if owls mean something to them.

I have learned when you get that "thing" in your stomach and/or your feeling that something like the appearance of an animal who shouldn't be there, usually that means something. Fleeting feelings especially that you might ignore and shake off, like "Wait a minute, did I just see what I saw ...???" Whatever it is is usually unique to you and it is there for a reason.

Besides having a little tea with an elder to tell you stories of your family, the history they lived, and their youth is a good thing to do anyway, even if they don't know about owls. It is a fruitful way to spend some time.

Love
Cat

when my grandfather died, my mom, aunt and I were all visited by a cardinal. (My grandfather's nickname was red and he was always a loud squawker.)

8. My experience with the carrion- and live-prey eaters is that when they express vocally
that something very bad is happening. I hope that your experience with them differs.

9. Well,
my father is very sick. He's been in the hospital for weeks. It's been quite a rollercoaster and I expect the outcome is not good. (How long that will take, I don't know.)

11. The owl can be a portent, but also a guide
My tendency is to shy away from the 'bad omen' feelings brought by some animals, even if we know they have a relationship with death, secrecy, etc... just because so much of our anthropomorphic lessons have been shaded by christian views (and they were quite afraid of EVERYTHING)

I am sorry to hear about your father as well... and will send you some love & light to assist you and the family in this trying time. Be open to your dreams, since Owl is nocturnal...perhaps she came to give you some info for your dad or how to deal with the inevitable...?

17. When my husband died, there was so much commotion with the
medics trying to revive him that I didn't notice that the owls were there. It was my neighbor who told me much later that after we and the ambulance left to go to the hospital, th he noticed the owls were in the tree watching us go. I know my husband died before the ambulance got there and now more than ever I believe they were there to escort his soul to the spirit world. I wouldn't doubt that they are around waiting for me. I am of that age where I could go at any time. I find it reassuring actually and not fear inducing at all.

12. If it helps
the first night we came home with our son after he was born, we heard owls hooting in the trees. Mr. MG checked--it was a pair of owls (I forget which kind)--mates even though it wasn't mating season. We took them as a sign of the Lord and Lady welcoming MG Jr. So...owls don't always mean death in every instance of a visit. We have to determine our own omen symbols, because they're different for each person.

18. Think of it as a lullaby.
You do get used to them and other noises in the night from nature. It's far more pleasant than cars whizzing by once you get used to the sounds. I like to listen to the frogs at night too. They help you sleep once you relax.

19. I live on a migratory path
which is nice, but sometimes, the craziest birds sounds wake me in the middle of the night. But you're right, much better than traffic!

20. I would love to hear crickets or frogs
at night. Luckily I don't hear traffic either, but I agree - it's like a lullaby.

I'd rather listen to nature's music than human-made music.

21. I love hearing them hoot back and forth
always makes me smile..I consider it a treat.

Sometimes I used to see them fly and that is also very exiting. And unlike what we think, they also fly during the day. I guess something startles them when they do that.

Where I m now, there are none that I have seen or heard - a lot of hawks, geese (not too long ago), egrets, crows -and I believe a couple of ravens.
