practical things we can do to help
along with intent and meditation, practical action can help. Even if we can't be there physically, we can help low cost/no cost.

Believe it or not -- hair. It's been used in the past to soak up spills. There is a place to donate. I'm way behind in needing a cut -- now seems like a good time. I'll also take some of this info to the local hairdressers, so they can donate all they collect.

Also, dawn dish detergent. They are collecting donations to send more detergent to wash the birds. And of course using it at home will support their company.

I'll also be taking all the above info to my literature class to help spread the word.

1. Ooooh, good tips.
I also need a haircut. And I was wondering if the Dawn dishsoap people were doing anything this time.

5. Why Dawn and not other detergent?
does anyone know? I wonder if Dawn has some chemical makeup that is ecologically more sound or something.

Thanks for the info, northernlights. I learned about Matter of Trust last week (they need donations of nylons, too - runs are okay!) but had forgotten about dish soap.

I've tried "green" dish soap in my own kitchen and keep going back to palmolive because I like the way it works.

7. something to do with the chemistry...it breaks down the oil
yet is relatively gentle on the bird's skin. I've read they use baby shampoo, though, on the babies.

Also, they syringe feed them pepto bismol to help buffer their crops, stomachs and gut against the toxic oil they ingested from trying to preen the oil off.
