Poll question: DU'ers Interested In Thursday Night Tarot Study Group Please Sign Up |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-03-05 07:22 PM by cryingshame
Hello dear DU'ers. If anyone is interested in meeting here for Thursday Night Tarot study groups, please sign up by clicking on the poll or posting a quick message of affirmation.
The intent of this study group would be to focus on the Esoteric meaning of the Tarot. This means learning the basics of Qabala.
'The Thursday Night Tarot' by Jason Lotterhand would be the initial suggested, though not mandatory, reading material. It's one of the most approachable and humorous books on Qabalistic Tarot ever written.
While Lotterhand's book wouldn't be a must,a deck of cards IS. I use the Builders of the Adytum deck but the Rider-Waite would also do.
Short note about Esoteric Tarot, it's not used for divination but rather to deepen ones understanding of Universal Principles. Learning the basic 22 Universal Principles is rather like learning the Periodic Table of Elements. It's the first step to mastering Chemistry as a subject.
Short note about me, I've been studying Qabala for 10+ years with an organization and do not consider myself an 'expert'. Just someone looking for some like minded people to review Esoteric Tarot with.

5. I study with Builders of the Adytum which was started by a Golden Dawn |
|
'alumni' named Paul Foster Case. He was their Praemonstrator for a time. The Golden Dawn has a very nice biography of him posted: http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cache:HUeWLvErwZgJ:www.golden-dawn.org/biocase.html+paul+foster+case+praemonstrator&hl=en

7. My cards have been dormant for too long. |
|
My tarot cards have been on my mind lately, I don't know why. I almost did a reading the other night, but my room was too messy :)
Thursday night is a good night for me. What time, though? I'm on Pacific time.
Any links to learning some basics about Qabalistic Tarot, please, would be greatly appreciated.

15. I just picked mine up again a few months ago... |
|
I was pleased and amazed that I hadn't forgotten as much as I thought. I use the Rider-Waite.
Qabalistic is new to me, but I'm game. (and yes, that is a pun on the origins of Tarot) :P

As with Astrology I am most interested in intuitive, psychological, and relationship aspects of an Art, and am not very keen on psychic or predictive stuff.

|
the focus is to move beyond 'cookbook' interpretations of the cards. i'd be happy to post some of the execises if anyone is intested. also, i've studied qabala for over 30 years and am also in a gd group. i'd be happy to share some of what i know and happier still to learn from folks here.

|
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 04:54 PM by cryingshame
using Thursday Night Tarot as a starting point and guide.
Opening post would start with a photo of the Key, attributions and basic principles along with a few questions to guide people and then open thread immediately to discussion.
Your comment about going beyond the 'cookbook' was very well taken.
Your suggestions for practical work with Intuitive Tarot would be a gift to us all.
There's a definite distinction to make between Psychic and Intuitive.
What do you think?

18. cool. that stuff is very helpful in understanding the tarot |
|
and in using the tarot as a spiritual system of initiation.
my partner does a thursday night tarot skrying/guided meditation (in Seattle). Before the skrying, he does a rundown of the correspondences, and reads the meditations from Paul Case's Book of Tokens, which are awesome. He also gives an image for each major card/path to use in later meditation, which are really quite powerful. I'll post those for each card/path as you cover them.
Perhaps I'll save the intuitive reading exercises for a different time/thread. I don't want to divert focus from your stated purpose, which is a very complex and rewarding topic of study.

21. It'd be too much to read that whole book straight through. It's like: |
|
Edited on Mon Sep-05-05 06:30 PM by cryingshame
read a chapter, play with that Key for a week.
read next chapter, play with THAT key for a week along with previous Keys.
:)
Then's there's the OVER ACHIEVERS who will read the whole damned thing at once.
But sometimes the less $ spent the better.

29. Learning Qabalistic Meanings Requires The Use Of A Deck That Uses |
|
pertinent symbols.
Thursday Night Tarot has cards in it, uncolored.
Rider Waite is the original.
To follow the discussion here, Moon Garden doesn't sound like it will have same symbology.

24. Thursday Night Tarot has the Keys in it. Just no color. You could check |
|
the BOTA website for colors... we color our own set.
If you want to get a deck, find an inexpensive Rider Waite.

but I have a class TTh from 5:30-8:00 PM Central. I'll go ahead and get the book, though. My favorite decks are Robin Wood (kinda sorta Rider Waite-ish, but pagan) and Tarot of the Cat People. Would either of those do for the study?

30. If you get the book, it'll have full page, uncolored copies of each Key. |
|
you can find the colors for the Keys online easily.
The symbolism is quite specific, so Robin Wood wouldn't work. Though I really like the artwork :)

|
Thursday?
How about 9:30 eastern?
that gives westcoast DU'ers a chance to get home from work and catch their breath?
Til then maybe we could discuss what Qabalistic Tarot is as compared to using Tarot for divination?
And stuff like that?
