Anyone here ever try 5-HTP for depression ?
I keep reading about it. They say it is preferable over St. John's Wort and Sam-e, etc.

2. it depends upon each person
I am freakisly sensitive and have to take small amounts of any of those things when It ried them. There have been conventional medical studies showing the effectiveness of St John's Wort and Sam-e. In fact St. John's Wort is the most prescribed antidepressant in germany because it works and has fewer side effects than conventional meds. I can't recall studies on 5-htp off the top of my head but they might have done some. I had too much trouble trying to calabrate the dose for me to keep trying it myself. Sam-e and St John's Wort are easier for my body. Sam-e even helps with my probably-fibromyalgia body aches as well as helping mood plus is reputed to improve liver health. St. JOhn's wort does not seem to effect body or joint aches but does improve mood and even makes my mouth smile when I am feeling physically rotten which is an interesting effect. It does really improve depression for me. I noticed it some the first day though the effect increased after a week and again noticibly a bit more after two weeks.

5. My rheumatologist recommended SAM-e for my fibromyalgia.

I haven't tried it yet since I'm just starting another medicine that he recommended and don't want to start two things at once.

4. I've not of 5-HTP for depression
but I use it for weight loss support. I've had good results with low doses of St. John's Wort, not so much with SAM-e.
