Say something nice about yourself.
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 12:43 PM by I Have A Dream
If you were your friend, what would you like about 'you'? Why would you choose to have 'you' as a friend? What would you value?

This won't work if you're modest. Be brave.

1. OOOooooH! I can do this!!!
(I need to, jobsearching can be *such* a downer, right?)

I am funny, earnest, nurturing and honest.... i am super creative, from my own writing to foam crafts with the kids, and i love to PLAY!

my exuberance and ability to get others excited about things is a great gift, and there is noone else you would want in your corner!

When the chips are down, i will drive across the state to pick you up from the bus stop and be your shoulder to cry on, offering wisdom and love and making you laugh despite yourself. I understand sacrifice and suffering and have a deep well of compassion within my soul for people whom others would cast aside...

that's not a bad start! :P
thanks for starting this thread, it feels really good today to be here... :grouphug:

3. I seem to have a gift with dogs.
Last year, when I first started fostering rescue dogs, the ones that came to me had been at shelters for what seemed like ages, regularly passed over. Yet the first 4 in a row that came to stay with me were adopted within 2 or 3 weeks. The Rescue Director started telling people I had 'the magic touch' for these dogs and any dog would be lucky to come to my house because it meant his 'forever home' was just a few weeks away.

I took a break from fostering for a few months and yesterday saw a dog at a nearby shelter who was listed as 'urgent'. They are at capacity and have to start euthanizing. He'd been there his whole life - all 6 months of it - and nobody gave him a look. I sent in the foster application this morning and got a call around 10AM that I can pick him up tomorrow. Went shopping for a bed, leash, collar, toys etc at lunch and when I got back to my office, had a voicemail from the shelter that someone had just come in and applied to adopt him. :D

Apparently I still have that 'magic touch'.

26. God bless you!
You have my heart already! I haven't seen much of you around here, so welcome(if you are new to our group) This past year I had to surrender my fur baby for numerous reasons, and it still hurts. I am so thankful for people like you. It turned out that listening to my guides was perfect timing! I had been putting it off for so long. In a matter of months I ended up in the hospital for 4 days, and my poor boy would have been locked in his crate all that time, so it worked out for the best. There is never a moment each day that I don't think of him, and am grateful to "Small Paws" Bichon rescue for taking him to his foster home. He is my profile pic on face book...until I can get some new ones done of me (a skinnier me with a new hairdo and color!)
Oh and as to my gifts.........God gave me a loving heart, and as I get older and the filters are thinning, the gift of speaking truth to power! My best talent is my altruistic....never say die...attitude. :hi:

I think the title was "Never too Old to be held" and I commented to my DIL on FB that it made me want to try "Dating for Seniors" on line!! I really would, but I can't afford it right now...'til I pay off my roofer, and save for a "piece of car"!!! LOL Then in this very post I find out that OGR is in a 5 yr. relationship from online dating!!!Synchronicity much????? LUV YA!!

4. Okay, I know the answers to this question
A couple years ago, I joined an online dating fiasco and it asked how my friends view me, so I asked two of my closest friends what they liked most about me.

I am a good listener, a good adviser, reliable, empathetic, generous and witty.

65. ROFL! Love the "tap tap" smiley!
Suddenly I feel compelled to come up with nice things about myself!

Okay okay...lessee...

Well, first, like so many here, I'm an empath, so I can really understand what you're going through. I also have this "talent" (of sorts) of being somewhat of a mimic/mirror--I have a tendency to pick up other people's personality styles and be the same way while we're together. Makes for a real bonding experience!

I'm not usually a worrywart, so I don't tend to freak out about stuff that isn't worth freaking out about, and that makes me able to talk friends off figurative ledges. (I've never had to talk anyone off a real ledge, so I don't know how good I'd be at that.) I can also analyze the hell out of anything, so if you bring me a problem, I can help you pick it apart and make sense out of it.

I've (finally) gotten rid of any tendency toward the dramatic in my life--I don't "do" catfights and salacious gossip and such, so a friendship with me would be pretty calm.

Oh yeah--and if all else fails, I'll make you laugh.

I'm a pretty good writer, but I'm not sure how that would figure into a friendship...but hey, if you need a killer cover letter for your resume, I can help!

Howzat?

14. Why would I choose to have me as a friend?
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 02:46 PM by OneGrassRoot
Good grief, I've ended up writing a novella and having a self-help session in the process!

Okay, the reasons I would choose to have me as a friend are often reasons people are turned off by me or feel hurt by me, even though that's never my intention.

I'm compassionate and empathetic. Perhaps because I am extremely sensitive and empathetic, I've also developed very clear boundaries and limited patience. If I feel it's best for all concerned, I can fairly easily exercise compassionate detachment. I can remove someone from my life with no guilt or remorse, so long as I know I've done my best, including close biological family members. It's because of this that I'm often viewed as very cold, yet in all honesty it's a form of self-preservation.

I'm honest, often brutally honest, though not with the intention to hurt feelings and always being mindful of NOT hurting feelings and only offering opinions when they're asked for. Still, I think this quality either draws people to me, or repels them from me. I've been really surprised by how much I can really, really agitate people just by being me, not having a clue that I've agitated them.

But because I am compassionate, empathetic and honest, I would choose to be my friend, even with the accompanying qualities others may dislike. ;)

On to the less complicated stuff...

I'm not sure why or what to call it, I just know that people tend to feel very comfortable, at ease and safe with me, right away. I've had complete strangers confide lifelong secrets and traumas. That makes me feel good, and I like that. :)

I'm SO not demanding; I'm easygoing, very low maintenance. To each his/her own so long as no one causes harm.

I'm loyal and dependable. (Hey, I was voted MOST loyal and dependable in high school. ;))

I like to give and receive hugs.

Thanks, IHAD! :loveya:

16. What got me thinking about this was this quotation...
"It's not your job to like me; it's mine." ~ Byron Katie

In my opinion, one of the most important things that we can do is nurture a mature love for ourselves, and that includes recognizing and articulating the good things about ourselves.

Far too often, we only see (what we consider to be) the negatives about ourselves when we have so many more wonderful things about ourselves that we ignore. Allowing ourselves to focus on the positive things doesn't mean that we don't recognize those things that we'd like to change about ourselves. It just puts things into proper perspective.

Corporate advertising definitely doesn't want us to think this way. The subtle mind-control that they exert on us by causing us to focus almost exclusively on what we don't like about ourselves is extremely profitable for them and is extremely harmful to us.

I teach a course called corporate advertising. I tell my students that television is the "24/7 feel bad" machine.

I will never forget the faces of the students in my graduate course. I said, "Ads are designed to make you feel bad about yourself. When you feel bad about yourself, you'll spend some money to alleviate that feeling. Whether it's $1.29 or $129,000, it works the same way."

Many of the students' faces were crestfallen. One said, "So that's how this works."

After spending decades in both advertising and as a teacher in higher ed, I don't listen to any TV or radio ads. I mute them all. I know how they work and it's safer this way.

I have had some very personal experience with fleas. For some reason, they skip over everyone else and go straight for me. (At least they used to when I had a dog.) I've found lately that mosquitoes don't like me nearly as much as they used to. I attribute it to being a vegetarian, although it probably has nothing to do with it. I don't know what else it could be though.

Anyway, I agree -- roaches, fleas, etc. Blech...

52. I give more than I get.
I am willing to give a lot of time, empathy, and whatever it takes to a friend, or to anything I volunteer for. I guess that is called being selfless. I don't think I am selfless, really. But I do give back. I show up and I am reliable.

I work hard.

People think I am weird, but I don't see it. Maybe I am blind to my faults.

I have been very good at nurturing talent, in my brother and in my children. I have been good at teaching people to read.

Is any of that any good?

55. muriel, you ask if any of what you stated is any good.
Would you like someone like this? I know that I would.

In reference to being called weird, I bet most of us in this group have been called that many times. I take it as a compliment. Who wants to be what mass consciousness considers to be normal?

I'd love to have you as a friend! :pals: I wish you had more people in your life who were able to see the jewel that you are. :)

53. another low maintenance person here
no drama.......

let's see, I picked up the lunch tab after my best friend bounced a check,

I am a pretty good listener, but phone calls aren't my favorite.....I fix that by playing computer games while I talk on the phone if people want to go on and on!

I give pretty good advice, and generally don't try to give it unless asked. I'm rather intuitive with advice, in fact, and sometimes blurt out the exact right thing.

I might want to be my friend because I am always volunteering to do energetic treatments for my friends, including entity removals. Some love it, but could be I freak some people out. I think that is okay. That probably keeps my close friends small in number. But the ones that I do have are better off for it.

I have a lot of general knowledge, jack of all trades, master of none, so I can hold my own in conversations on a lot of different subjects, unless someone asks me to prove something.

I'm pretty self contained and have no energy vampire characteristics. It isn't all about "me."

I am reliable, and generally come through with what I say I will do, (while at the same time procrastinating.)

I make pretty good caramel brownies???

I feel that I am a safe driver.

My hope for you is that you see these things more easily the next time you look for the good in yourself. They're so easy to see from this side. :)

One thing that you didn't mention that always touches me about you is that you're very sincere. That's wonderful to see.

64. I'm a font of trivial knowledge
Do you need a partner for Trivial Pursuit? Pick me!

Do you need a friend to call to make sure you get that Million Dollar Prize? Call me!

Last week I won body lotion on an internet radio show because I knew about Elias Howe's dream that led to his inventing the sewing machine. Just the latest in trivial prizes I won for my trivial knowledge.

78. This is such a lovely thread to read
... it really is. IHAD, this is so like you to start something like this - you have such a gift for fostering community.

Here's mine:

Oh the occasion of the day after my 50th birthday, I say this:

I have a courageous spirit and don't hesitate to do what I'm called to do whatever that may be. Even if it scares me, even if I don't know why I'm doing it - if I'm guided to do it, I do.

Also, I'm sweetly dorky - one of my happy places is perusing LOLcat pictures. I'm really 12 at heart. :)

81. I feel compelled...
Edited on Sat Oct-23-10 10:55 PM by I Have A Dream
to try to be the kind of person that I know will be the norm in the future. One of my favorite quotations is "Be the change you want to see in the world." by Mohatma Gandhi, and the Universe and my higher self expect this of me in every action I take.

I get no enjoyment from winning if someone else loses in the process. I love to help others to shine, and I love when a group finally gets to the point where its individuals no longer volley for attention or credit for themselves at the expense of others in the group but instead have made the internal adjustment which causes them to want everyone in the group to excel, shine, and succeed. They get to the point where they realize that when one person in the group succeeds, the whole group benefits.

The most joyful thing in my life is when I am given the honor of helping someone else to realize the amazing person that they are, and most people really are quite amazing if you look closely.

I also really resonate quite a bit with OneGrassRoot's earlier post.
