Need help w/dream symbol, please...
I had a dream where I was in a kitchen that had a great many dirty dishes in it. The kitchen was familiar to me, one that spent much time as a little girl.

I was placing many of the dishes in the dishwasher. There was also a sink filled with water, where I was also washing dishes (in addition to loading the dishwasher).

Anyone got any clues on these symbols--the kitchen, dirty dishes, sink of water and dishes--Me washing the dishes--and loading a dishwasher (with intent to wash more dishes)?

Thanks!
bliss_e.

1. Well, here's my two cents, for what it's worth...
Cleaning the dirty dishes in your childhood kitchen may represent a metaphoric cleansing of old ways of being, old thought patterns, relating to your youth. Dishes hold food, that which sustains us. You are cleaning them in water...traditionally symbolic of feelings, emotion. There's also an organizational and methodical element to your process in how you are loading the dishes.

All of this is fodder for more thought. Only YOU can really interpret what the dream means to you. We're the ones that assign meaning to things, afterall.

Another thing to consider: was the "you" cleaning the dishes the "younger child you" or the "present day you". That could provide more insight as well....More hints: How did you FEEL in the dream? Comforted? Frustrated? Purposeful?

Have fun. Spirit talks to us in many ways...

2. Hi Shine--
I appreciate your feedback. What you said resonates with me.

I was me today, in the dream. I felt purposeful with maybe a tad sense of obligation--like I HAD to do the dishes. But that was to a far less extent than I felt I WANTED to do them.

I just LOVE dream interpretation--it's cool to me that spirit communicates with us this way.

Thank you again for your ideas--they helped me a lot! :hi:

4. It sounds to me like
you have a lot of things going on in your life that need attention (cleaning up) and that you are dealing with them.

6. Lots of possible meanings
Washing dishes is a fairly layered dream theme. It probably does show the obvious thing- cleansing. However it is interesting that some of the dishes you washed by hand, and others went into the dishwasher. As though some childhood problems are more easily dealt with than others. I'm guessing residual childhood issues since you'd said the kitchen was very familiar to you. You also might want to take a look at the shape of the dishes, or plates. If mostly it was plates, then you could also check out the symbolism of circular plates. These could indicate some sort of health concern, such as disks, a valve, platelets, whatever comes to mind. Good luck with finding all of the possible meanings!

7. It's interesting that you bring this up...
I wondered about this very thing--why was I washing some by hand and putting others in the dishwasher. I appreciate your looking at that, and pointing it out.

I had a tough time finding anything in my books or on-line about this...

From what I recall, it was primarily round dishes, and some cups--going in the dishwasher. I think it was only plates (round dishes) that I was washing in the sink...

8. I know what you mean
I often have trouble locating interpretation online, and many books I've looked at are really bad. Online, using dogpile or another engine, if you enter dream interpretation "washing dishes" there are lots of dreams about this, some might interest you, who knows. I tried doing this the other day and found there to be a special significance for women- as though it harkened back to the 40's 50's when dishwashing was considered a comforting and established role, also a demeaning role. There was also a guy who dreamed that he and Madonna were washing dishes together, in complete silence.
Dunno about the circular plates thing, that probably is far-fetched. But it does help sometimes to just let your mind wander a bit.
