Psychics Join Search for Missing Show Dog
NEW YORK - With few physical clues to the whereabouts of an escaped show dog, the hunt for the award-winning whippet has entered another realm.

About 12 psychics are counseling searchers as they check the heated cargo buildings near where Vivi escaped from a travel cage at Kennedy International Airport, Paul Lepiane, the dog's co-owner, told Newsday for Tuesday editions.

"They are telling us that she is alive and they are telling us she is warm," said Honi Reisman, a friend of the dog's owners. "They are saying she's in a building _ but there are hundreds of buildings."

According to breeder Bo Bengtson, the animal bolted across the tarmac last week at 25 mph as workers chased her on foot and in three cars. The 3-year-old whippet, also known as Champion Bohem C'est La Vie, nosed into a marsh area and disappeared.

1. I've been following this story
All along, I've had the feeling that Vivi will be found. I so empathize with her human, though. It must be hell wondering where she is.

3. Whippets
Edited on Wed Feb-22-06 04:44 PM by LibertyLover
My husband and I have two of these little dogs and they are the sweetest things imaginable. Whippets were first bred in the north of England roughly 200 years ago as hunters of small game, like rabbits, and, believe it or not, as bedwarmers. It is hardwired into the whippet brain to sleep in bed, under the covers, with their human. One of ours prefers the bottom of the bed around our feet, while the other one prefers to sleep under my pillow. Wonderful dogs. I truly hope that Vivi is found soon and is safe.

4. that's so cute I can't stand it!
The idea of an animal under the covers cracks me up!

Out cat Greenlee loves to crawl under the covers and she makes us laugh all the time because of it.

They are beautiful dogs. If I were a dog person, I would have one in a heartbeat.

Someone here at DU posted a series of three pictures of what I am pretty sure is a whippet. They were the funniest dog photos ever. They were of the dog on the couch when she knew she shouldn't be. She was living it up on the couch and then the human comes in. She sticks her paw in the human's camera ("talk to the paw!") I saved these photos because they were so funny.

6. Whippets - the perfect dog for catlovers
I swear that whippets were cats in their past lives from some of the things they do. My older one loves to walk across the top of our sofa. He just jumps up and sashays across - the first time I saw him do it I couldn't believe it. And they love their comfort - the more blankets and pillows to curl up on, under and around the better.

11. I have an Italian Greyhound.
They are an older breed, smaller than whippets, been around for about 2,000 years or so, from northern Africa. The whippets are new. But the IGs, they are definitely hard-wired to sleep in your bed, under the covers. Mine likes to sleep between my legs with her head on my pubic bone, sort of. (Sounds weird, but it's really quite comfortable.) They were great bed warmers during the Middle Ages, as they hvae a very high body temperature, over 100 degrees. And these guys are smaller than whippets. Reallyl beautiful dogs. Serious couch potatoes that can run like nothing you've ever seen.

I hope they find the whippet. My IG is pining right now because my 12-year-old is away for a month.

5. Awww! Thx for sharing that. I never knew of their history.
I've been praying for this little doggie. I live just outside of Philly and am very farmiliar with the area where he/she was last seen.

and used JFK all the time for travel, so I know the area too. I hope that Vivi is found safe and soon.

8. Fundraiser Planned to Extend Search for Vivi
NEW YORK -- Supporters of Vivi, the award-winning show dog that escaped from a travel cage at the airport on the way home from the Westminster Kennel Club show, have planned a fundraising event to help find her.

The 3-year-old whippet, whose formal name is Champion Bohem C'est La Vie, apparently bolted from her carrier at John F. Kennedy International Airport as she was about to be loaded onto a plane for the flight to California on Feb. 15.

She has not been seen since, despite extensive search efforts by volunteers, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and her owners, Jil Walton and Paul Lepiane.

Admission to tomorrow's "Vivi and the Strays" party at the Garden City Hotel's nightclub will be $10, said hotel vice-president Brian Rosenberg, who also owns a whippet.

9. update on Vivi
Viva Vivi? Lost dog spotted!

Rescuers press hunt

By KATHLEEN LUCADERMO
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Dog trainer Bonnie Folz tapes up flyer offering $5,000 reward for finding show dog Vivi, who has been missing since running off from JFK in February. Jil Walton and Paul Lepiane, owners of the prize-winning whippet, are closely monitoring hunt from their home in California.
The dog-gone five-month search for a show pooch is heating up with sightings reported in Queens - giving a dedicated band of would-be rescuers new hope that Vivi the whippet will be found.

The pampered California show dog, who bolted from her crate at Kennedy Airport in February, was most recently spotted in rambling Forest Park, south of Forest Hills, where she may be surviving on a stray's diet of squirrels and garbage, searchers said.

A dogged team of volunteers has been searching for Vivi since her great escape after competing at the Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden.

In addition to passing out flyers, they have used motion detectors, set out food and traps - and even put out sand they hope will yield paw prints. A search dog has been trained to track Vivi's scent and a hotline has been set up - (877) JFK-VIVI.

10. Forest Park
I know it well since I grew up near it. It's many miles from JFK and it's basically a forest, just like the name says. I would imagine it'll be harder to find it in there than it would be in a residential area or near the airport.
