is to note when it rises. If it rises at sunset, it's the full moon.
Generally speaking the moon rises about an hour, an hour and fifteen minutes later each day. So if you don't notice exactly when it rises, the day before and the day after the full moon can fool you.
Once, about ten years ago, on an October evening, I was coming home from a nearby mall, turned onto a road heading due east, and it looked as if a basketball were floating above the road. It took me several seconds to realize I was looking at the rising full moon, and it was just the wonderful good luck of driving in that direction at exactly the right time of the evening, on one of the very few days of the year I might have seen the moon like that.
I have a collection of other wonderful nature memories. What a beautiful world we live on.
