I received my first holiday card yesterday, a pleasant "thinking of you" card from my new (hopefully) girlfriend. We've been seeing each other since June. The fates have not been kind to her. To keep a long story short, after moving across town to a better location, closer in, her father died without warning in October, and she got a permanent job offer--in DC, later in the month. She's been working contract and having a permanent position with benefits is a BIG deal. All in a 3 month span; IMO, that's enough stuff to happen to possibly tank a beginning relationship. She's as unthrilled about moving out of town as I am. Life has been incredibly hectic for her.
Without further delay, here's the cast; 10-card cross and staff layout, Rider-Waite deck:
1) 5 Wands 2) 5 Pentacles 3) 10 Wands 4) 7 Pentacles 5) 8 Swords 6) Major 17 7) Major 15 8) Page Wands 9) 8 Pentacles 10) 6 Wands
I asked my mother, who was a skilled reader in her younger days, but she put them down due to great skill and low self-esteem (a story for another day) and she saw that there are no cups. She is far out of practice and couldn't offer any insight.
So, I figured that I'd ask for an assist. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. :)
P.S. If you don't want to answer to the board, PM's will be gladly accepted.

1. A tricky transition is reflected by the sorta stuck and turbulant energy |

of the first 5 cards. They are of the present and past. But moving into the Star card (one of my two absolute fave cards) bodes really well, not just for this being a good move for her, but a important one as well, as is also reflected in the outcome.
The devil card in the placement of self reflects a modicum of self doubt, hesitancy, fear, insecurity, grief, and perhaps her resistance to the move and leaving you.
The page of wands in the placement of the environment suggests that she is far more capable of receiving mucho available support from others and rallying than she probably knows.
Eight of Pentacles in hopes and fears would indicate that she can hone her skills and this is hardly a lateral job change but she might be concerned about the work load as well as other challenges related to the move.
The outcome says, it'll be worth it, totally.
You perhaps can see the distance as your ally instead of an obstacle. I'll explain this at greater length if you so desire later when I've time.
I just got in and this is kinda rushed and I haven't done Celtic Cross spreads in well over a decade. I do astro spreads now.
With the Star card in that placement, meditation and affirmations could definitely smooth some of the rough edges.
I don't tend to do this when I'm just landing but hope it helped a bit.

I didn't expect to see the Devil card, but on the converse, I didn't expect to see no Cups show up. The cards at positions 6 and 10 are very auspicious, so I probably shouldn't worry so much.
The new job in DC is a nice feather in the cap for her, and a very nice entry for the resume. I knew she was concerned, but I let her know that she should not let this go by. I'd like to think when 2 hearts find each other, time and distance will become trivial.

6. Upon some further reflection (and some sleep) |
|
I realized I didn't address your concern about the lack of cups in the spread.
Given all that she's been through in recent months she might be in "auto pilot" mode as many are when reality shifts in HUGE ways.
She'll most likely get around to processing the myriad of emotions around these transitions when she's ready.
From an astro point of view, I'd look to the natal and progressed lunar placements to see what's going on with her emotional wiring but it's hardly an indication that she's robotic or anything like that. :)
Perhaps we all waft in and out of all four elements, paying attention to different ones at different times depending on our inherent proclivities, orientations, coupled with, and in response to environmental stimuli and circumstances.

After thinking about it, Cups represent emotions, not necessarily romantic feelings. I can guess that feeling has got to be difficult right now. You make a good point about "auto-pilot" regarding feelings.

Which I suddenly think is...not so relevant to the question you were focusing on here, but oh, well. I tried.

3. Five cards, max are needed |
|
Celtic rules. but too many. You didn't mention a question. So this is general.
5 Wands. change of energy. The Fire. Creativity. 5 Pentacles. change of fortune. Monetary. If you are going classic celtic cross, I'm too tired.
You say, "major 17" and "major 15" .. and expect a tarot reader to read?
Death and rebirth. And a lot of "change". The Pentacles mean it looks like you are goning to get away with your deviousness. But the wands are going to catch you. You won't get away with it.
So, will you stop now?
