The elephant in the living room
Let us speak of addictions.

seems there is a lot of denial about how addictions cut us off from the source. If you have ANYTHING that is more important than your spiritual work (booze, material things, compulsive behaviors) you are shutting off the Light.

No matter how much we "strive" for enlightenment as long as there is something that we can not or will not give up, chances are our spiritual growth will suffer.

The actions of opening to the Light unfortunately include the pain of recognizing how our egos try to hold us back. Fear is the killer. We attempt to hide from the pain of living with all kinds of "coping" mechanisms. Booze, drugs, sex, gambling or shopping, they are all a way to "take the edge off"

But taking the edge off is not our task right now. Feeling those "edges", owning them and being able to confront the fears they hide is the only way to open that channel of light. Fear and Faith do not dwell in the same house.

Confront your fears, name them, throw them into the light of your consciousness. Fear hates Light. And, my friends, I can tell you from personal experience, once you unmask those fears they grow smaller and weaker. It is the act of hiding from Fear that gives it strength.

Some have had bad experiences with 12 step programs, some have never looked at them. But let me say that a 12 step program's ONLY purpose is to give us tools to find a spiritual way of life. Tools to help us on our journey to connect with the Source of All. A 12 step program is not the only answer to confronting Fear but it is and has helped millions of people all over the world from all walks of life to find strength.

Here is hope and blessing to all who are dealing with Fear in all it's forms. Don't let your addictions keep you from the Love that is broadcast every where in every moment. Find the tools you need to tune into that Energy and banish the Fear.

I'll leave you with a Channeling that was posted by another member in another Forum as a prayer for all of you in pain or fear today.

1. Thank you for posting this!
I really needed to hear this message today. I've been putting some things off because of the fear of what might happen -- what might be expected of me -- by the Universe if I remove those barriers and open myself up to the possibilities. May I have the strength to do so.

2. I'm glad Love Bug
I dunno why I was led to post this today, I don't usually post a lot in here but today seemed like the time

Remember Fear HATES light, so just throw those babies on the table and examine them. they are usually much smaller than we think in reality

3. As difficult as it is
I have found for myself (and I can only speak for myself) that fear and negativity faced head on tends to become smaller and less powerful, but if I try to avoid what I fear, it becomes enormous and negatively affects almost every area of my life.

4. hiding is *SO* much work isn't it?
so much easier to walk out free, willing to meet the demons head on

when the battle is done, you can hold your head unbowed even if a bit battered eh?

8. Unfortunately(?), I can't even do caffiene.
Not without paying for that - forget the other substances. If bubble baths ever start causing me problems, I'm in serious trouble. As long as there are bubble baths and World's Funniest Animals, I'm okay.

10. Thanks AZ.
The channeling is powerful.

http://www.emmetfox.net

For some reason the other night, Emmet Fox jumped into my mind. When I was first in recovery, 1979, one of the members gave me his book, "Sermon on the Mount". I had been raised traditional Christianity. Southern style. When my 5th grade SS teacher 'taught' us about prayer, she said try it. Ask for anything. So I did, and got the bicycle of my dreams. When I reported back, she was rather aghast and mumbled something about, that's not what prayer is inteneded for! I have a literal brain, and followed instructions. It was confusing. yes/no?

So, Emmet Fox was quite a shock to read. I was a bit afraid. But I think his writings, more than anything, set me on the path to metaphysics. He uses a "God" construct. But it isn't what they used to teach in 'real' church. If you get my meaning.

As someone who is dealing with an elephant, I'm open to any solution. (Planning to purchase that book Saturday). His website says that he helped large numbers of alcoholics recover. I never realized that. Makes a bit of sense though. We seem to be a sensitive lot.

From his site >
There is no difficulty that enough love will not conquer, no disease that enough love will not heal; no door that enough love will not open; no gulf that enough love will not bridge; no wall that enough love will not throw down; no sin that enough love will not redeem...it makes no difference how deeply seated may be the trouble; how hopeless the outlook; how muddled the tangle; how great the mistake. A sufficient realization of love will dissolve it all. If only you could love enough you would be the happiest and most powerful being in the world.
- Emmet Fox

He also writes that the solution to any problem is to raise your consciousness. I believe this to be true.

Something brought this thread to mind this morning.
It reminded me of the exchange: Do you know how to eat an elephant? Answer: One bite at a time. :D

11. Emmett Fox is wonderful IMO
not having had any religious training as a child I was in awe of the spiritual path laid out in the Sermon on the Mount.

Rumor has it that Sermon on the Mount was used by the founders of AA as required reading before they wrote the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous
