Free Republic member's son being killed in an auto vs. pedestrian accident?

Bless this young man's soul, and peace to his family.

And, I hope this doesn't sound callous, as it is not meant that way, but this incident brought together two extremely ideologically disparate groups of people. There are some people on both sides of the political fence who have shown anything but care and compassion toward others, just because of their political affiliation. But thankfully, for the most part, those divisions have taken a back seat in the face of this very sad event for this family.

I've never understood that (dissing someone solely because of their political affiliation, and refusing to reach out in any way, shape, or form), and I don't understand it now. This family lost this precious young man in a horrible way, and I for one am praying that they can find some peace, somewhere along the way.

Anyway, just wanted to share this with the folks here.

1. Yes, I did see it, and it was very touching. I hope that the family sees it.
It's sad that it takes something like this for us to realize that we are one, but I'm glad that the people of DU are evolved enough to see this in a situation like this.

Thanks for posting this here, SeattleGirl.

2. I've never understood that sort of hypocrisy...
When some right-wing commoditarian acts in a hateful, heartless, soulless manner, I am appalled at the inhumanity, but I am neither surprised, nor unduly offended, since I don't expect human compassion from them...
When some religious fundamentalist acts in a hateful, heartless, soulless manner, I am appalled at the inhumanity, but I am neither surprised, nor unduly offended, since I don't expect them to act humanely toward anyone not of "the One True Faith"!
However, when someone who claims to be a Liberal or a Progressive acts in a hateful, heartless, soulless manner, I am appalled, I am surprised, I am offended... because I DO expect those who claim to be humanitarians to act humanely.
   Anything else is hypocrisy.

3. Saw it, and posted on it.
Some FR members have also apparently seen it. I would have to say it's one of the most amazing posts I've seen this whole year. And I don't mean that in a negative way; I mean that in a good way.

All year long, we have FReepers vs. DUers (or DUmmies, as they like to say), but sometimes something happens that transcends that.

It hurts my heart and soul to read some of the things posted on FR, and it also hurts to see some of the things posted on DU. I cannot join in with that kind of vitriol.

I do not care what someone's politics are. I do not care how nasty they may act. I will not stomp all over someone who has lost a loved one.

If even for the briefest of moments, this young man's death can help two polar opposite groups reach out in a compassionate way, then his death was not a total loss, even though for his family, it is a devastating one.

And I will continue to send thoughts of love, comfort, and healing to them.

4. Yes, saw it,
and posted on it. There was one chap who was very cruel in what he said, and I noticed his post was out of there, pronto. I'm glad. Part of my definition of liberal is having compassion, even for those who disagree with you.
