Alternative Health: Ayurveda
I love to look at all of the systems out there to promote and maintain good health. One that I've been exploring lately is Ayurveda.

Here are a couple of "snips:"

http://www.ayurveda.com/online%20resource/intro_ayurveda.pdf

Ayurveda is considered by many to be the oldest healing science. In Sanskrit, Ayruveda means, "The Science of Life." Ayurvedic knowledge originated in India more than 5,000 years ago and is often called "The Mother of All Healing." ............ The principles of many of the natural healing systems now available in the west have their roots in Ayurveda...

and

Ayurveda places great emphasis on prevention and encourages the maintenance of health through close attention to balance in one's life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle, and the use of herbs.

I have been using some Ayurvedic herbs, along with strict dietary restrictions from my doctor, to manage some of the health issues I suffered from last year.

Interestingly, two of the more prominent ayurvedic herbs are turmeric (hence all the curry!), and Tulsi, a kind of basil. I love Tulsi tea!

I can't say I'm well-versed in ayurveda, but the emphasis attracts me; prevention, balance, diet, lifestyle, and "right thinking." Sounds like a recipe for good health to me!

1. The only contact I have had with this healing form is thru Dr. Weil's
books and site.

I have heard lots of good health benefits of turmeric lately, though, in health magazines and articles. Tastes so good too in Eastern dishes!

Thai basil too...

I'm certainly open to more info and experiences here.

2. I don't know Dr. Weil;
I'll look for the site.

I'm running late for work at this point; it's always so tempting on staff meeting day to avoid showing up at work. ;-)

Here's wishing a great, healthy day to all.

9. Andrew Weil, MD
Is a Harvard trained physician. He was into alternative
medicine before it became popular. He can take partial credit for introducing alt. and complementary medicine into the mainstream.

3. Ayurvedic remedies have helped me as well...
:hi: LWolf

...and I very much like the fact they take all the bodies into consideration when they diagnose a health issue.

Here's another intersting link ...

from the
Definition Of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is a holistic system of healing which evolved among the Brahmin sages of ancient India some 3000-5000 years ago. There are several aspects of this system of medicine which distinguish it from other approaches to health care:

1. It focuses on establishing and maintaining balance of the life energies within us, rather than focusing on individual symptoms.

2. It recognizes the unique constitutional differences of all individuals and therefore recommends different regimens for different types of people. Although two people may appear to have the same outward symptoms, their energetic constitutions may be very different and therefore call for very different remedies.

3. Ayurveda is a complete medical system which recognizes that ultimately all intelligence and wisdom flows from one Absolute source (Paramatman). Health manifests by the grace of the Absolute acting through the laws of Nature (Prakriti). Ayurveda assists Nature by promoting harmony between the individual and Nature by living a life of balance according to her laws.

4. Ayurveda describes three fundamental universal energies which regulate all natural processes on both the macrocosmic and microcosmic levels. That is, the same energies which produce effects in the various galaxies and star systems are operating at the level of the human physiology--in your own physiology. These three universal energies are known as the Tridosha.

5. Finally, the ancient Ayurvedic physicians realized the need for preserving the alliance of the mind and body and offers mankind tools for remembering and nurturing the subtler aspects of our humanity. Ayurveda seeks to heal the fragmentation and disorder of the mind-body complex and restore wholeness and harmony to all people.

5. Thanks for the link!
I'm continuing to explore. I'm attracted to systems that look at the "whole," rather than treating parts in isolation.

7. I went to one in Washington state...
Was given a list of foods NOT to eat.. breathing techniques and green tea. I believe there might have been some supplements as could afford them...so long now it's hard to remember.

Cleaning of the tongue, too, I believe.

11. The same way you make any herb tea;
I can get it loose or in a teabag.

If it's loose, you put the tea in your teapot (how much you use depends on you; start with a couple of tablespoons and adjust to your preference), pour boiling water over the top, and wait 10 minutes or so. Pour through a strainer into your cup. Or, just use the teabag. ;-)

You might find it at a local health food store, or there are some online sources. Here is one:
