Ooooh, spooky
"The nutshell: In 1959, nine experienced Russian cross-country skiers — seven men and two women, led by a man named Igor Dyatlov — headed to the Ural Mountains, to a slope called Kholat Syakhl (Mansi language for "Mountain of the Dead," ahem) for a rugged, wintry trek. On their way up, they are apparently hit by inclement weather and veer off course and decide to set up camp and wait it out. All is calm. All is fine and good. They even take pictures of camp, the scenery, each other. The weather is not so bad. They go to sleep.

Then, something happens."

I don't remember ever hearing this story before. Sure makes you wonder....

1. reminds me of Twilight Zone
But sadder, since apparently it is true. The gray hair overnight was what reminded me of an old sci fi film I saw--someone's hair turned gray overnight after seeing a ghost.

No, I also had never heard this story. Eek.

2. Great quote from that article (which I'd love to borrow for one of *those* threads in GD someday)
"So of course, you jump further. You reach for the paranormal, metaphysical, unknowable, to things like UFOs and spirits and ghosts, dark forces and mysticism and the occult, because, well, that's where the action is. That's where we get to touch the void, dance on the edge of perception, realize how little we truly know of anything.

After all, if you really think all there is to this world is what your five senses show you, if you think there's always got to be a logical, earthbound explanation for stories like Dyatlov, well, you might as well just join a megachurch and wipe your brain and your intuition and your deep, dark curiosity clean right now."

4. Yes, indeed
That part is why I posted it here. I saw someone else put it in GD but I haven't looked there, yet.

Being from Russia, back then, who knows? But it isn't the only story of similar occurences, just a "new" one.

I am intrigued by death. I saw someone die several years ago. They were resting, peacefully when suddenly their eyes opened wide, like in suprise. And then they died. What did they see?

5. I meant to bold this part in particular
That's where we get to touch the void, dance on the edge of perception, realize how little we truly know of anything.

That's just beautiful

3. This one is new to me
Zoinks! (Gotta love Mark Morford for finding and discussing these things in his column.)

This would have made a good In Search Of episode. Wow wow wow.

I read more at the Wikipedia entry he links, and then looked at some of the photos linked from that. The first photo I enlarged, of one of the tents found in the field had (guess what) an orb! I followed the link to the recent Russian newspaper story and they included the photo but removed the orb--probably thought it was a photo artifact...

6. If there was radiation,
how could film survive? Wouldn't that over expose all of it?
