The latest press release to come my way...
Santa Fe’s 8th Fire Experience
Holds Intentions of Hope and Respect
Santa Fe, NM — Dave Courchene, Jr., an Anishinabe elder whose traditional name is "Leading Earth Man" has sparked ceremonial fires all over the world -- from the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, to Japan, to the Middle East, and to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Courchene will soon journey to Santa Fe to be part of The 8th Fire Experience at the Institute for American Indian Arts (IAIA) campus.
In keeping with the emerging pathways of the 8th Fire, people of all nations and all faiths are invited to gather in a circle of respect under the stars on Saturday evening, May 10, 2008 in Santa Fe.
The 8th Fire Experience -– a vision of hope for the future, for the earth, for the children -- will begin at 7 pm., presented by the Texas non-profit organization Rites of Passage in collaboration with IAIA.
The public is invited to this free event and sacred fire ceremony, which will be part of the annual pow wow at IAIA. Please honor the pow wow with respect, courtesy, and friendship. If you do not know pow wow etiquette, please ask. While there may not be room for everyone in the theater to watch the film, there will room for all at the outdoor fire circle.
The heart of the event will be a screening of the acclaimed documentary, THE 8TH FIRE, and talks by Anishinabe elder and spiritual advisor, Dave Courchene, Jr., and by Dr. Larry Dossey of Santa Fe, a physician who bridges science and spirituality in his writings.
The film, the speakers, and the sacred fire ceremony will be woven together with the music of traditional Native flutes and the rhythms of the Grammy-award winning Black Eagle drummers and singers of Jemez Pueblo, NM. Santa Fe journalist Steven McFadden, author of the nonfiction saga “Odyssey of the 8th Fire,” will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Following the film screening, the elders will gather the people in a circle on campus under the star-filled sky, and strike sparks for a sacred ceremonial fire of unity.
Courchene is descended from a long line of leaders and chiefs of. At one time the Superintendent of Education in his Pine Falls, Manitoba community, he “felt compelled by forces beyond his control to quit his job and go on a ceremonial expedition of peace around the world.”
He followed his vision, and with the people of his Reserve he built Turtle Lodge <
http://www.theturtlelodge.com/ >, where he leads traditional First Nations ceremonies to revive and sustain the spirit of all the people. His talk and THE 8TH FIRE documentary film are based on the Anishinabe people’s ancient prophecy of the Seven Fires, and the promise of an 8th Fire if people choose pathways of respect.
The 8th Fire understanding – arising from the ancient North American prophecy known as the Seven Fires of the Anishinabe -- is that a time would come when the earth would enter into a change marked by a great number of signs in sick skies, sick waters, and sick earth. When this conflagration of troubles arose, ‘new people’ (people of all colors and faiths) would gather in respect to seek insight and direction.
“They will come to a fork in the road. One road will lead to materialism and destruction.....for almost all living creatures....The other road will lead to a Spiritual Way...This path will lead to the lighting of the 8th fire, a period of enduring peace, harmony and a New Earth where the destruction of the past will be healed.” - D. Courchene
