Wickford's Aries New Moon Newsletter
Aries New Moon, April 5, 2008

Since the Aries New Moon is another beginning to Spring, I'll wish you all Happy Spring again.

I hope Spring is awakening in whatever part of the world you live in. Out here in Vegas the springtime green leaves are back on the trees and one of my neighbors even has a lilac bush in bloom! (For those of you who know me, I had to restrain myself from going there at night and picking some. Lilacs!) While back in New England, I hear it’s still cold and rainy on this April Fool’s Day. That’s what the cosmic energy feels like – some moments it feels like new life is just around the corner, and at other times, it feels like we still have to hunker down and wait out the storms.

Two things happened to me in the past two days that exemplify this. Yesterday at the grocery store, I walked by an older man (80’s) who was angrily telling a younger man (the store manager) to not push him – and the manager didn’t seem to care. Since I didn’t hear the whole story, I don’t know what really happened, but we have to treat our elders with some kind of respect, don’t you think? And yet the anger is all around – old issues that we need to let go of. Even my older friends at ping pong were getting annoyed at each other. Everyone seems on edge, like it’s a cold and rainy day without an umbrella in sight.

The other thing that happened was that on one of my walks, I go by horse farms, and just about a month ago one of the mares gave birth. I’ve been watching the cutest little filly slowly get her legs as she follows Momma around. She’s one of the most beautiful beings I’ve ever seen. Today on my walk, she came over to me at the fence and touched my hand! She felt safe enough to do that. She let me touch her nose before running off to play. I felt blessed.

One energy – different manifestations. There’s lots of anger around, lots of thwarted desires, lots of fear about security and then there’s also a sense of being in tune with the world and connecting with the new life. The choice of how we experience this energy is really ours. We can get caught up in what Tolle calls ‘the pain body’ and fall into unconsciousness and negativity or we can put our trust in the fact that Spirit is calling us to a new life - to be present in the NOW. Aries energy is sort of like that – the NOW.

Blame it on Mars! He is the ruler of this Aries New Moon. And while you’re at it, throw some blame toward Pluto as well. (Only joking! Planet DO NOT control us. They provide energy which influences life.) This duo, said to represent the two ends of the spectrum of desire – Mars symbolizes our personal desires while Pluto represents the urge to evolve – have been dancing with each other since last fall when Mars went retrograde at 12º Cancer. Making for some hard and frustrating times, as people are brought face to face with what really matters to them. Now Mars will return to 12º Cancer on April 4th, completing its retrograde mission – to figure out what we really want and need. Every two years Mars goes retrograde – it looks like it travels backward from Earth’s point of view – and all that assertive, passionate, desirous energy turns within us to help us figure out what it is that we desire most - after we let go of old desires that have outlived their day. In Cancer, part of the story has to do with feelings – letting go of old childhood wounds, old resentments, old loves, old needs – and now asking what and by whom do we need to feel nurtured today? It’s about family and our deepest selves. It’s about getting outside our “ego” as Eckart Tolle would define Ego and being present for the important ‘others’ in our lives. Or as Dane Rudhyar in The Pulse of Life puts it, “Cancer is man in the God-impregnated state; a Holy Place in which God has descended.”

Mars in Cancer can teach us the cosmic lesson of finding our emotional security WITHIN. While friends and family are the ones who matter most to us, they can never give us the security we inherently know can only be found in Spirit – the Spirit within each of us. When you think about the sign of Cancer, it starts on the Summer Solstice – a moment of cosmic silence, when the Sun Stands Still. The God-force within can only be heard in that silence. So Mars in Cancer can pick up on that energy and take it out into the world, through us. How will we use him? To grapple with the life we have or to bring war upon those we project our fears onto.

At the new moon, Mars will conjoin America’s natal Sun at 13º19’ Cancer. Will America manifest a new vision of the Warrior Archetype that Mars symbolizes, and use the skills of diplomacy, strategy and innovation to deal with the war in the Middle East? Or will we revert to the old dominating warrior stereotype that embraces “shock & awe” tactics against helpless citizens of another country that is not bowing to our power.

Below are two news blogs I’ve read in the past two days.

1. According to Chris Floyd at the Empire Burlesque web site:

The Saudi government is now preparing plans to deal with "any sudden nuclear and radioactive hazards" that may arise from an attack on Iran's nuclear reactors. This was reported by a top Saudi newspaper, Okaz, and relayed by a leading German news service, DPA -- one day after Dick Cheney paid a visit to the kingdom. As we noted, no one knows exactly what was said at that confab of allied authoritarians -- but something sure lit a fire under the Saudis, and convinced them that urgent action is needed to brace for the lethal overspill from a strike on Iran.

Floyd points out that nothing in Saudi Arabia becomes the top news story without government approval. That such a story should be released the day after Cheney's visit, sends a message to everyone about what's on Cheney's mind.

2. WASHINGTON DC -- The long awaited US military attack on Iran is now on track for the first week of April, specifically for 4 AM on April 6, the Good Friday opening of Easter weekend, writes the well-known Russian journalist Andrei Uglanov in the Moscow weekly "Argumenty Nedeli." Uglanov cites Russian military experts close to the Russian General Staff for his account.

The attack is slated to last for twelve hours, according to Uglanov, lasting from 4 AM until 4 PM local time. Friday is a holiday in Iran. In the course of the attack, code named Operation Bite, about 20 targets are marked for bombing; the list includes uranium enrichment facilities, research centers, and laboratories.

I CAN ONLY HOPE THIS IS NOT TRUE.

Pluto has a part to play as well in the news. As the higher octave of Mars, it brings up issues of will and force – will we use our power for life or death? Pluto goes retrograde – turns backwards – on April 2nd at 2º Capricorn and will go back for a last visit to Sagittarius until November 27th. Pluto always sweeps away something that has died. Sagittarius is about our connection to the Natural Laws of the universe, so Pluto will give us a last purge of our old religious, educational and legal belief systems. Capricorn is about our collective structures – government, corporations - our society in general. We can already see how Pluto might affect these structures in the next 15 years while it transits Capricorn from what has happened since Pluto went into Capricorn last January 25th. It seems we are in for an intense and interesting time.

For an example of Pluto's power to point out what's dead and needs to go, look at the plan to give the Federal Reserve more power to control our financial system. And it shows in the Reserve’s ‘birth’ chart: The Federal Reserve Board was instituted on December 23, 1913, at 6:02 pm EST in Washington, D.C. The Board’s Sun is at 2º Capricorn (Pluto is on it now) and the Board’s natal Pluto is at 0º Cancer (now opposite Pluto). Does the Board need more power or does it need an overhaul? Does it need to be dissolved altogether? Do you even know what the Federal Reserve Board is? Its natal Pluto is in the 12th house of secrets, so maybe we need to investigate just how much power they already have. With Pluto going retrograde just as the Treasury Secretary announces the plan, perhaps it will never get off the ground. The Board has natal Mars Retrograde at 20º Cancer, so let’s wait and see what happens when Mars gets to 20º Cancer on April 20th on the next full moon.

Another cosmic happening is that the planetary conjunction of Pluto/Uranus that energized the 60s is having its mid-life crisis, which in astrology is shown by Uranus in opposition to its placement in the 60s. It's a cosmic wake-up call for all of us to pay attention to how we are dealing with the issues that sparked the changes of the 60s. Is it any wonder that we have a black man and a woman running for president as a sign of that wake-up call? Or that an old white man still represents the old order and war? Or that the issues of race and gender are finally in the forefront of our national dialogue?

This Aries New Moon is the first of the new year that always begins in astrology with Aries; it forms a T-square with Mars in Cancer and Jupiter in Capricorn. The tension these four planets exert on each other pushes the energies - of a new birth, of expansion and confidence, and of going for our desires - to some kind of resolution. Have confidence to go after what you want. Venus is at 29º Pisces for this new moon – will we open to compassion and the knowledge we are all one?

The Sabian symbol for 17º Aries: Prim and silent giantess seated in a chair flanked by two stone lions.

Fidelity to a private and seed-like vision of the world; the virgin priestess who holds fast to the point of emergence; mysteries of the Sphinx.

This symbol speaks to the need for each of us to hold true to our inner purpose so it can manifest in the world. Each of us holds a piece of the puzzle which will eventually change our world. Hold true to your SELF and you will indeed birth something awesome this year.

The Dream Lady is going through more transformations. I'm trying to find a time when people on the East Coast and on the West Coast will be able to watch.

If you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear about it.

When we start up again, I'll be working with dreams, storytelling and astrology.

1. Another great issue, WickfordBard.
Packed FULL of information.

Point 2 above - with Iran - isn't Good Friday already over? We've not done anything, so let's hope that's a good sign.

You spoke of silence at the Summer Solstice - that the God-force within can only be heard in that silence. I agree and will go one step further and say that silence changes the rhythm. It's a palpable shift, silence.

Again, thank you!

3. Yes, I didn't research it.
I thought it meant that Greek Easter, which is often different from the Catholic Easter, would be april 6th. Someone else pointed it out as well. I had to write it quickly and I didn't do my research. Sorry. But it did make the point I wanted it to! Bad me.

Thanks for pointing it out, Delphi!

5. Last year,
2007, Good Friday was April 6th.

I do believe it was on track. I don't doubt it for a nano-second.
That was about the time the British soldiers were released >

4. Bravo! And thank you for this.
I'm so in agreement on:

"For an example of Pluto's power to point out what's dead and needs to go, look at the plan to give the Federal Reserve more power to control our financial system. The Board has natal Mars Retrograde at 20º Cancer, so let’s wait and see what happens when Mars gets to 20º Cancer on April 20th on the next full moon."

Absolutely right on, and the house of secrets aspect "priceless".
