OK... Any plant people out there, please send us some good vibes tomorrow!
We've moved to a new house (long story I'll tell later--great house and a lot of serendipity involved in its purchase--awesome!). Along with moving our belongings from inside the house, we've moved almost our entire garden with us (which was/is extensive), and have had great success with most of it, even during the recent northern California heat wave. We'd hoped to leave the grape vine there, though, since it's about 30 ft. long and moving it would be a major project, plus not the best thing for the plant at this time of year. But after making what was to be a last visit to the old place today, I learned that our ex-landlord is simply going to kill it. He's pulled it off all its supports and it's currently just lying there on the ground. It was crying to me. We can't bear the thought of him killing it (his energy is very nasty), so I have informed him that we are coming back to take the grapevine. I've got a 45 gallon wheeled container to place it in--we are going to dig as big a root ball as the two of us can possibly manage--and we are going to do the very best we can to save it. I know that this is an iffy proposition, but it's sure death for the plant if we don't try to move it. We are going over there at the crack of dawn in the morning to begin this project. Anyone out there reading this early tomorrow morning who would like to lend some plant-loving energy to this project, I know the grapevine will drink it up. Every little bit helps. We very much appreciate any help energy-wise with this. Thanks so much!

Thank you so much for doing everything that you can to save it, Joolz. I will certainly send you lots of love, energy and light. Your intention is everything. Heaven forbid that the vine doesn't survive, but even if that happens, at least you tried. I'm visualizing it happy and healthy in its new home! :)

18. Thank you, Dream.
You've echoed my thoughts here. IF--goddess forbid--it doesn't make it, then at least we know we did everything we could to try to save it, and didn't just let it die a the hands of that idiot landlord. He really seems to relish that role--the "lord" part... meaning HE thinks he is a Lord in the old medieval sense, and we were the serfs. The land itself is only secondary to that relationship. But enough on him. ick It's too soon to tell whether or not it will make it, but we are loving and babying it. We shall see. It's up to Momma now. Thanks so much for your visualizations and kind thoughts.

5. It'll be fine -- I moved a single vine 2x
the one thing I learned is that if you clip the vines close to the root it won't hurt the vine and it will help you move it. Keep some leaves (I would keep 3' or more) so that it can make food. It'll come back next year and probably take another year to bear fruit.

You can also take cuttings from the tender growing ends --they'll root easily.

20. Thanks for the advice and encouragement, crikkett.
I didn't have time to take cuttings, unfortunately. Wish I could have done so. Some of the leaves are very wilted, but others are still soft and pliable. I am hopeful.

6. Okay. Am wishing your beloved grape vine the most graceful of transitions.
With great care it'll hopefully make it.

Don't be afraid to cut it back and as my horticultural grandfather always said "water the hole not the plant."

This stuff is miraculous. . .

http://www.coastofmaine.com/soils-quoddy.shtml

Dunno if it is readily available on the west coast but my cousin who runs a greenhouse experiment using various kinds of manure found that he got 30% more growth and blooms through using that stuff. I've been hooked on it ever since.

You don't need to top dress the whole area but it's slow release and if you put some in the hole, it'll insure the health of the plant for a good long while.

Good luck with the transport.

8. I'll be visualizing a safe trip.
I left 2 grape arbors, and a lush garden, behind when I moved north 3 years ago. Gardening is tough here; I haven't done much.

I miss my grape vines. Table grapes just don't grow and bear in this climate.

I admit to going to "google earth" just to see if my grape vines were doing well with the new owner of the house.

They were, last time I checked.

I will visualize a smooth move and successful settling in.

Grapevines seem to have a strong life force. It's the impression I get, anyway. I'm always happy to be around them.

13. Thanks so much!!!
I knew I could count on you good people to help out. :) We got it up and here by around 10:30 this morning. We were able to get a good deal of the main root system, so I am hopeful (sandy soil helps a lot with that). We gave it a good shot of B1 solution, and have left it in the big container in a semi-shady spot with the vines propped up on some old lattice. I cut it back some, but nothing drastic. We'll give it a couple of days to readjust to the new light conditions, then will get it into the ground in its new home and baby it. It's a bit wilty, but not so bad as I expected. So far, so good!

We moved an equally large Virginia Creeper vine here a few weeks ago and have had great success with it. You should've seen us! LOL I gently wrapped it with rope to bind it together for the move. It looked like a big ol' leafy green snake! It took four people, two carts and a wheel barrow to get it into the truck and then into the back yard. I waited a few days, then cut off all the parts I was sure were absolutely done for, and waited some more. It looked really awful for the first ten days or so. I wasn't sure if it would make it or not, but kept babying it. Then, all of a sudden, just in the past few days there was a rush of new growth. It is now absolutely thriving and looks lovely. Ditto with a very large potato bush shrub (the kind with the gorgeous deep purple flowers). We thought for sure it was a goner, but lo and behold, it's now putting out new growth.

The grapevine I figured was gonna be a bit trickier, but we are hopeful. This was a huge amount of work, and we were both absolutely drained, so the rest of the day has been spent resting up. I'm feeling a bit recovered now, so wanted to come here to thank you all before the day is done. Thanks so much for all the good energy y'all! I KNOW it helped. :)

14. how did it go, Joolz?
I came too late to this thread to focus on the move but I can send happy "settling in" thoughts.

I thought crikket's advice above was good.

Let us know how the grapevine is doing. It boggles my mind that your landlord wanted to tear it out; he should have been thrilled to have it.

26. Thanks so much, NJCher.
It's never too late to send energy. It's still in need of love and light. See my posts above for how it's doing. As for the landlord... ARGH. He is such a jerk. His words: "Oh, don't worry about getting that grapevine out. I'm just gonna rip everything out anyway. I want to just have a bare back yard." WTF... he's an idiot! We were going to leave him a gift that would have added to the value of his land, but he couldn't see it. That yard was "bare" when we first moved there 10 years ago. Nothing but sand, crabgrass, and prickly burrs. We transformed it into a lush garden. But, knowing he was going to just "rip it out," we had no choice but to take our garden with us as best we could. At least we've left behind some good soil. That is our remaining gift to the land there. Not to HIM, but to the land we loved and nurtured there.

15. Vibes to survive
We are building next door to us, and I fully intend to transplant my wildly flowing wisteria, and several other plants that I love. I keep telling my wisteria that I am sorry I had to pull some of its vines out of the fence where it is climbing, but it is coming with me.

I am sure your grapevine feels the love. It doesn't want to be left behind to die. Good on you. Let us know how it is doing.

I wish you great luck with moving your wisteria. They are so lovely. And the rest of your plants, too. I think they will understand what you are doing and why. I am sure all of my plants did, and the vast majority of them have bounced right back with vigor. At least you don't have to move them very far. It should be a fairly quick process, both for you and for the plants. When the time comes, let us know and we can send you some good energy for the move. :)

28. I am a plant person
(as a child was in the woods barefoot most of the time with my cats and animals) I ask plants to help me, envision them healthy and big and talk to them and send them my love energy. I have called to herbs to come to my yard, and other times have found one growing that I 'needed'. They are definitely conscious beings who see us and feel our presence. I have gone into deep depression from seeing woods torn down and trees being chainsawed, so I guess I am a plant person. Yesterday I was sending so much love and thanking my wisteria for being there, and this morning discovered a bloom (this is not the time for blooming) right where I was standing.
I loved reading The Findhorn Garden, about nature spirits, and often have communicated with the devas of each plant to present what I wish them to do, perhaps they will agree and perhaps they will have something else in mind!

30. I have news!
The grapevine has teeny new baby shoots! I was out walking the doggie tonight and decided to check it with the flashlight. In that bright light I saw tiny bits of green on the old vines nearest to the roots. I'm so happy!!! We did it!!! :D Thank you all sooooo much for the wonderful life-sustaining energy you lent to this endeavor. And on that note, the blackberry vine I thought for sure was a goner also has new green shoots. I feel blessed. :)

So pleased you and your flora made a smooth and graceful transition.

My kid has been swiping my car lately (with my permission) to go play tennis in the late night and the cops have been playing a cat and mouse routine with the kids.

They had the lights turned off earlier than before.

I told him to invent a form of tennis wherin one holds a flashlight in one's left hand.

It could get interesting.

A closer inspection today revealed MANY buds and small leaves all along the main canes, some as far as 10-20 feet away from the root. Awesome! It's coming back quite nicely. :) Faith. I always had faith that it would survive.
