The Hanged Man from the Tarot.
This guy has become persistent in my thoughts.

1. Tarot Reading
I recently had a tarot reading. Since I had a minute left, I asked what was my life purpose and pulled the Hanged Man. What do you think that means?

5. I don't know if your reading was personal,
but if it was, it seems you are at a place in your life that you have to make a hard decision that will change your life.

2. In a good way or a bad way or something in between?
How do you perceive him? I have only played with tarot so far and really need to buckle down with study but for me my inclination is to see even sterotypically negative cards as potentially good. When I use The Universal Goddess deck I am thrilled to draw Death as in that deck it is Kali who is one of my spirit guides. She is powerful change and transformation and transmutation.

In that deck the hanged man is Frigg standing to the side of her husband Odin. The little book says this "The wait and sacrificed of nine days and nine nights are the keys that open the doors of knowledge and wisdom"

So what have you been waiting for and sacrificing for and maybe wondering if all that effort is worth the awaited result? Something is certain coming but the birth pangs of change are painful. Can you hold on a little longer to see what comes?

3. Enigma.
I am not drawing the card. I seldom read the actual Tarot. I use another deck of a faery type to read when I want answers about things close by. But my roots are in the old fashioned Tarot. I am not dreaming this but getting impressions during the day as I go about my affairs. I am in my mind drawn up by my foot upside down and my other foot crosses into a figure four as the hanged man does. I have been ignoring it because it's not making sense in my day to day life, or even in context of things outside of me.
I can't ignore it anymore because the impressions are persistent. I hope others can figure this out. I know it has nothing to do with me personally. It's bigger.

6. If it feels right to you maybe laying with your legs crossed in that manner
might bring more detail. I will try this as I prepare for sleep tonight and see if something can slip through during that hypnogogic state.

To me the Hanged Man often makes me think of someone doing yoga or other rigorous physical practice to acheive spiritual breakthrough. Hanging, waiting, meditating as blood rushes to the head and chi flows. to me it is a card of change and transformation with the changes more internal than external and physical than say The Tower.

A transformational figure was just elected President. I get such a kick out of hearing political pundits of all things to use such metaphysical language. His is both neither, nor and both. He is black, he is white, his a self identified mutt. He is on the threshold, he is liminality. And here we are nearing the closing of the year a liminal time where we are on the verge of shift from increasing darkness to increasing light. liminal liminal liminal. all I can think right now is that word. maybe what you are perceiving is an internal shift going on in the collective and many individuals.

When I first saw this thread I grabbed the closest deck, The Goddess Tarot, instead of going for one of my favorite and shuffled intended to do a one card draw. Well one card popped right out and it was 1 Magic:ISIS "The great Egyptian fertility goddess is a potent symbol of the alchemic transformation suggested by this card. She alone was the possessor of the secret name of Ra the Egyptian ruling god, giving her unlimited magical Powers. Meanings: A growing awareness of the magic within yourself. A yearning to grow beyond perceived limitations. You are able to transform your life though the strength of your originality and power -- all you need to do is own it. Renewed creativity and vigor.

8. OMG Isis.
Even before I started learning about the world of mysticism I was drawn to Isis. I bought a T-shirt to wear on the beach that had Isis and her wings drawn on it. I do know about Egyptology but Isis drew me more than the other goddesses. Of course as I got older I really did start learning about the gods and goddesses of antiquity. You reminded me of this and other symbols of goddess power.

15. The Isis card

or if the above does not work go here: http://www.tarot.com/tarot/decks/index.php?deckID=11&cardID=1

This deck is nice but for me my favorite so far is the Universal Goddess. Still it must be meant for me as I found it at the Goodwill for 99cents!

I have a kitty named after this Goddess. I almost named her Bastet but feared Bastet would think me yelling at her instead of the cat when kitty did something bad ;) Isis has less of a temper than Bastet who does not suffer fools and foolishness gladly. Isis the Goddess not Isis the cat that is :P

19. I share the same occurrence. Whenever I look out the
Office window, I usually focus on a certain tree, and for the last two weeks, whenever I see that tree, I 'see' the Hanged Man out there.

I am not sure why. It doesn't make me feel uncomfortable or anything, but I didn't have that happen until just recently.

7. ! I have been thinking about the Hanged Man All. The. Time.
I think he's representative of voluntary sacrifice, but also of inertia, contemplation and sometimes doubt.

17. been groovin to a myth metal band's song @ Hanged Man on single repeat lately
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 10:49 AM by NuttyFluffers
it's the seeking of wisdom through voluntary sacrifice. the crisis of water: the crucible of emotions. taking a moment away with all your inner turbulence and suspending yourself to find a new calm, a new way, a new understanding. naturally something is lost in this process, a sacrifice, the eye of odin to discover the gift of writing and runes; self-blinding to implode the frustrated old energy and appeal to find a greater logic through inspiration.

a significant loss of vision, a greater gain in calming logic and power.

bathe yourselves in the boiling froth of emotions, let it bubble you to a new state, losing sight of the distant and fantastic, but leaving you with a greater clarity for potent and lasting manifestation.

the geyser of emotions in DU and everywhere is example of the suspended state of roiling feelings. the pressure released, the cooling will begin and a greater sense of where we are and how we can actually get there (with new tools of wisdom) will come through. but first the Hanged Man, the crisis of water/emotions, must be understood and fully endured.

10. You'll notice he doesn't look especially perturbed about his situation.
I've always kind of seen it as a self imposed "time out" of sorts. The Fool (all of us) has taken a time out on his journey thru the Major Arcana, and in this card he's in a meditative state. He's drawn inward, essentially.

The Hanged Man is capable of producing some amazing insights if the energy is harnessed properly, just as it is capable of leading us all astray. He's hanging upside down and he's getting a fresh look at everything!!!

Just my two cents.

11. Changing perspective, possibly?
The phrase that I've always used when getting this card is that it's the voluntary submission of the ego to the spiritual power of the heart. I think this is from the Motherpeace Tarot: The Hanged One fundamentally represents the voluntary surrender to a death and resurrection process celebrated in shamanism. It is an initiatory process involving some form of burial followed by a leave-taking of the soul from the body, and then its return.

It goes on to talk about losing yourself to a sense of ecstasy and surrendering to love. The Goddess within wants to talk to you; be quiet so you can hear.

12. He has been coming up a lot in readings lately for me
the archetype seems to be connecting to others as well. :)

I think the hanged man would be apropos of the current period of time, especially in the outer world. We are obviously in a lull in between major events and changes. So far so good. In Obama we see a potential for change that has fueled our journey to this point, however, there is not much else we can do but wait until the new year for our government to be put in place (and pray the idiots in charge don't do anything worse than strip the "O's" off the white house keyboards).

Whatever the scale of the situation, from personal to global, this card shows the big picture is out of our hands on a earth/physical level for a bit. I always see the lesson of the Hanged Man as 'Don't Panic'. Remain calm and keep working on your personal and inner stuff. This is a good time to meditate and keep your balance. Patience and transcendence. It's probably a good time to do lightwork as well.

The energy will change, soon I think it will be time to work.

13. To me the Hanged Man "seeing life from a different perspective"
and/or "inertia by guilt" or "taking on the world's problems"

16. I have been thinking about the hanged man too.. I have been
thinking in terms of sacrifice, someone who is so strong that they can take being the hanged man in a situation to transmute the dark energies to light. Maybe Obama, he surely has a daunting task ahead of him.

20. I think it's becoming clear to me now.
Obama is going about reform in the wrong way by taking the DLC route instead of the FDR route. So there will be missteps and the way to recovery will be longer and harder, but we will recover when he realizes he's taken the wrong path and goes back to the fork in the road to take the right one.
