Hillary as Secretary of State?
My husband just heard on TV that he offered her this. Think she'll take it? Any vibes on this out there?

1. I don't have any feelings or thoughts one way or the other, myself.
But I do wonder why so many people are all over the map on it.

Watching various talking heads, it seems that none of them can come to a concensus about it either.

2. I think it would be a positive move. Nothing intuitive here but just my opinion.
President Clinton was loved around the world for the good he did on the international scale more so than here at home. My Irish husband's family were enthralled with him because of what he did for brokering some peace in Ireland and they were thoroughly indignant over what Ken Starr and the Republicans were doing to him over affair Monica. Europeans see these things as invasions of privacy which even heads of state have. I believe Hillary will have a positive acceptance in the international community because of her husband's work before her.

3. If she's going to gain a position in the upcoming administration
I truly feel she's better suited for Secreatary of Health and Human Services, as her behavior in the primaries was a far distance from anything even remotely diplomatic and she's worked on Health Care for so long.

So international folks know who she is. That hardly infers automatic finesse or delicacy or any sort of wise judgement.

If he's going to choose a woman. . .

Susan Rice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susan_E._Rice or Samatha Power http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samantha_Power would be far better choices for SOS, sans baggage.

Otherwise, Hillary would be better in the Senate where she is.

11. I completely agree
As a NY'er, I would much rather see her remain in the Senate. I also think that the women you mentioned are far better suited for SOS.

5. Maybe. I get a good feeling at the thought of her doing the job but not sure if it will happen
I am wondering if this might be a post she would not hold a whole term as may SoS have in the past and then get appointed to a different post.

Before her name came out I had a feeling it would be Bill Richardson along with the sense he would do a good job.

6. Any vibes on other appointments by President-Elect Obama or in related events?
I get such a good feeling about Tammy Duckworth. I have been googling to see if she is going to get picked to take up President Obama's senate seat or to something in his administration.

10. Duckworth is COOL. (I love her.) But I confess, for a while now,
I've been getting a not-so-great feeling about Joe Biden's situation. I feel he may not remain vice-president.

7. I personally think she would be a terrible
Secretary of State. But that's just my opinion. I think she carries too much baggage, is too much of the same old same old, has been entirely too supportive of the Bush policies. What's needed are truly new people, especially those who will actually represent new thinking and looking forward. I am VERY concerned that Obama is not moving in the right direction. And I don't want to hear any crap about how he has to move slowly. W behaved as if he'd won by a huge majority, and while Obama needn't duplicate his bullying tactics, I think genuine change is what's needed, and putting in all the old retreads from the Clinton years is hardly change.

9. well, Gee W is mediocre, surrounded by shady dealers, so Obama acting different
Edited on Tue Nov-18-08 09:06 AM by crikkett
doesn't frighten me at all.

But i'm not exactly comfortable with Mrs. Clinton as SoS. It's the triangulation and the money her husband makes. I see her as a Justice.

Chief Justice.

12. My feeling is that the so-called leak
was not by Obama's people and I really feel that he does not want her. I think that the "leak" was put out by Hillary's supporters who want her to get the job, and are trying to force Obama's hand. The offer by Kennedy to work on health care was put out as a way for her to save face because Obama is not being steamrolled.

Even the talk of putting her in that position has made the whole thing about the Clintons once again. It would be a disaster for more reasons than one to give it to them.

13. The first leaks were by people on Obama's team
according to every news report I saw or read. Her people denied anything was going on for several days according to the reports.

Personally I lean towards any conflicts coming from those working for Obama and Hillary more than from those two themselves. Hillary is a pragmatist and I am sure Obama will make sure anyone who signs on is willing to go with his program. The Clintons are respected and liked around the world so it would be a quite a coup for him to get Hillary to join forces with him putting that reputation and her skills to work on his agenda. My feeling a lot of the drama going on is simply made up by the rampant media interest drooling over anything Clintonian dying to dig up something naughty but having to make do with fussing over their own fuss

That is my take and impression. Only time will tell how accurate this is.

14. You are right.
She has her work ahead of her undoing the shoe shopping former SOS's international sour notes.
