Any sense of whether the recent upswell in opposition to Prop 8... |
|
...is finally "it"? As in, the last gasp of close-mindedness before equality is the law of the land?

1. My feeling is there is more to come but that this could be the beginning of the end of this prejudic |

having such political power. We all have gotten an awful good taste of oppression under the w. admin. and to get glimpse of Freedom with the election of Obama and then to see it brutally snatched from our GLBT kin has taken the collective POedness to a new level. The rest of us are about to grasp more freedom and liberty and THEY DARE DO THIS?!?!?!?! :nuke:
Now the religious 'right' and rightwing in general aren't giving up but this is a turn in the tide of battle because we have seen the change we *can* and *will* create working together. We are more organized with more groups working together. I believe the rwingers have more death throes to throw than all the horror flim bad guys put together and will cause more trouble but I feel this really is the beginning of the end. They won't be able to get so far and do so much damage as before - as long as enough people keep working together to create the kind of world we want. it isn't enough for some to create their own little bubble of peace, justice and equality we need as many joining their bubbles together.

i remember a gay activist interviewed by, was it Maddow? Harrison on the Edge?, who was a complete Debbie Downer. the activist was furious with the new generation of young queer youth, considering them complacent, ignorant, and unappreciative of the work done before. he was not very hopeful. he said he expected a step backwards, or more, before people really realize that these things could be lost if vigilance becomes this lax.
seeing the energy this event galvanized, it seems like a bit of retributive karma for the utter complacency and blase' attitude of communities all around, but particularly in CA political parties and organizations. expecting to 'get by' on reputation and 'just enough' doesn't cut it; remaining active and caring is the way to make change and keep progress. organize, organize, organize -- agitate, agitate, agitate. eventually this too shall pass, but it definitely seems expected for the abysmal state of organization in politically neglected CA. perhaps this is the crisis needed to truly wake people up and let light shine away encroaching darkness? we'll see...

3. In defence of the younger generation... |
|
...which is NOT me (I'm 42), but I AM a gay man....I teach in a college, my partner teaches here as well - we are in the same department, and we're as open as can be, the kids all know about us, come to our house, etc. I don't know if I'd classify it as "complacency", per se, as these kids just flat out DON'T CARE about our relationship. That sounds misleading...not that they don't care about us as people, or about the health of our relationship, it's just that the fact that we're two men instead of a man and a woman is seemingly not important to them. They're gender-blind. The fact that WE consider ourselves married is good enough for them. The Prop 8 decision and the similar action in Florida (which is where we are) came as a surprise to them because it just never OCCURRED to most of them that anyone would have a problem with two people being together voluntarily. Which gives me great hope that in about ten years all this hubbub will be a moot point, because these kids will be out in the world making decisions and voting in full force.
Granted, I teach in a music department, so these kids are less apt to have a problem with gay people anyway, BUT as I said before I am in Florida, North Florida to be exact which is the SOUTH in the worst sense of the word, and a big Southern Baptist stronghold.

4. sounds exactly like the complaint of older-generation feminists, blacks, and immigrants. |

Nice to see we're all human. I say this b/c I think that CA will do the right thing.
Prop 8 only passed by 4% and 8 years ago, prop 21 (same thing) passed by 21%.
It's in the courts now. One question is whether the measure revises the constitution or amends it. If a revision, then the CA legislature must ratify it w/ 2/3 majority (not goign to happen).
Additionally there are a handful of lawsuits challenging the measure.
It's not law yet, and noone knows when it will become law, so Solano County is still issuing licenses and conducting marriages.
Curiously, Atty Gen Brown and his staff don't personally support Prop 8, say so on tv, and yet are charged with defending it. In fact they won't allow pro-8 guys to represent themselves. It's got the pro-8 guys pulling their hair out.
