You Create The Reason For Your Existence: Forest for the Tree
You Create The Reason

You create the reason
for your existence
Create the reason
for your existence

How many people really know what
they're talking about
or if what they're saying is true
All I know is what I observe
All the rest is created by mind
It seems there is something
rather than nothing
Non-existence does not exist
I'm trying to explain the essence of being
to get a realization of what I consist

You may think it absurd to make a
theory of reality
when reality is relative
to the mind that occurs
but since the mind that occurs is of the
same species
the genus homo
then I'm talking to you

There's an infinite parallel theory that
the universe splits
into innumerable copies of itself at
every moment
There's a superstring theory that there
are ten dimensions
six of which are so small we never see
It's possible that everything that exists
equals nothing
It just popped into existence through a
quantum fluctuation
and I think it's important that you
consider the fact
that the mind may be a mathematical
abstract

Forest for the Trees is a musical group. The group was the brainchild of Carl Stephenson, an eclectic producer known for his work with Beck. Difficult to classify, the group Forest for the Trees is probably best described as experimental psychedelic trip-hop. Stephenson began the project around the same time he was working with Beck, and by 1993 he had completed the majority of what would eventually be released as the self-titled Forest for the Trees album. That same year Stephenson began to obsessively tinker with the album's contents, but then suffered a nervous breakdown from which he spent several years recovering. The self-titled album was released by Dreamworks in 1997, and followed by an EP, The Sound of Wet Paint, in 1999.

Forest for the Trees included input from many musicians, including Beck, John "coz" Acosta, Papa Bear Martinez, Mark Petersen, don device, and Jasper & Amadeus, among others. In addition to producing, Stephenson plays violin, guitar, sitar, drums, keyboards and the didgeridoo. "Forest for the Trees is also beautifully infected with a collage of sounds from answering machines to dripping water to roller coasters, which bring a real-life aspect to rather abstract music."

1. Wow! Pretty awesome seeing metaphysics put to
music in the United States. I mean in stead of glorifying the world around us, as in a lot of song, the group goes straight to the heart of the matter.

To me, these lyrics are great:

You may think it absurd to make a
theory of reality
when reality is relative
to the mind that occurs
but since the mind that occurs is of the
same species
the genus homo
then I'm talking to you

It seems to describe ASHAG. Nice to have other genus homos to speak to :)

Thanks, MagickMuffin.

2. They have more songs that address metaphysical properties
"Algorithm" C. Stephenson/J. Coz/M. Peterson)

Everything that ever was
is a song that is sung to existence
I keep stepping over the boundary
and I see the essence of my being
Spiraling, panoramic emotion
Sentimental, eternal vision
Melodies of intrinsic meaning
riding so very high

Algorithm of happiness
Algorithm of perfect bliss
Algorithm of consciousness
Algorithm of Satori

Undulating pattern, caressing,
Plowing perspective shift
Pulling in a wave of thought
from ... the infinite
Sensing a chaotic touch of love
That the ebbs in this beautiful cycle
Sometimes riding a very strange loop
back in time I find

They are one of my favorite bands. I wish they would make more.
