I am SO Thrilled and Proud that I helped Election President Barack Obama
Edited on Wed Feb-25-09 12:25 AM by MagickMuffin
As most of you ASHA members know I worked extremely hard to election President Obama. I'm just overwhelmed that I noticed what a Great Leader he is, who had the ability to understand the crisis facing our nation.

As I watched the Address tonight I  with tears of joy and compassion as he recognized ordinary people who have spoken out (the 8th grader) or did something good for the benefit of others (the millionaire who gave his employees bonuses) even making the rethuglicons choose to sit there and look foolish for their partisan ways or get with the program.

There IS something extraordinary about President Obama and I AM SO PROUD TO HAVE HIM LEADING OUR COUNTRY AT THIS TIME!

Namaste,

:loveya:

2. Thank you very much for your work on behalf of the Democratic party.
I for one had finally given up regarding ever seeing something so common sense as locating and ending spending upon programs with zero benefit. (slaps forehead).

10. It was a learning experience I'll never forget
It was fun and I met so many wonderful people. Being a shy person as I am, it taught me to get out and meet people with a common goal.

I need to continue to work on behalf of everyday people.

3. Yeah, MagickMuffin, you have a lot to be proud of
and we have a lot to be thankful for.

I was most astounded by the rebuke last night coming from Jindal. I heard his schpeil on MSNBC and Chris Matthews saying it all with his "Oh, God" response before Jindal even started talking

6. Funny thing about the "Oh God" comment, I said the exact same right before I heard it from Chris
I thought I was hearing an echo. After Jindal's diatribe I went back to make sure the "oh God" comment was for real.

4. Isn't it wonderful?
To be anticipating an address from our President with gladness instead of dread...

To well up with tears of joy and shared compassion instead of disgust and helpless rage...

To feel inspired and energized -- fired up and ready to go! -- instead of depressed and paralyzed.

This incredible man is our President... and I'm still pinching myself. More importantly, I start each day asking, "What can I do today to help?" instead of wanting to sleep until the next election.

7. Yes, it is wonderful, I saw early on how Barack Inspires People
He IS an inspiration to me. I'm so Thankful that he was able to win in a Landslide.

He actually motivates people to aspire to higher aspirations and challenges ahead of us. It's so sad the rethuglicons refuse to work with him, but it will backfire on them BIG TIME.

Fired UP and Ready to GO!

5. Another grateful voter!
Thank you for working to help President Obama get where he is--as he is supposed to be here.

I think I became aware of him a little bit late, since I avoid media as much as I can and didn't come back to DU until the energy was clearly turning towards Obama (I was here years ago, different name).......

anyway, I knew there was something very powerful, very meaningful and was getting intense goosebumps as I learned more about him. Really deep intuitive knowing.

It's so cool! :)
(I'm listening to Team of Rivals on CD lately...an excellent history of Lincoln. I recommend it highly. So many parallels to the present and to Obama. Plus it's inspiring to know Lincoln is one of Obama's heroes, especially as you learn more about Lincoln the man himself.)

8. The primaries were rough on DU, I couldn't understand the outrage
But I realized people had their choices, I was originally an Edwards supporter. After Edwards dropped out we researched which candidate to throw our support behind and we decided that candidate would be Barack.

I was glad that the candidate wasn't chosen early on because they both came here to campaign. I stood in line for 3 hours, met wonderful people while waiting. It was amazing. Then I went to work on becoming a Delegate, I made it all the way to State, but there wasn't enough slots for National (which you had to campaign to be nominated, something I knew I wouldn't be able to accomplish, so I declined the opportunity) however I continued to work here locally.

Barack being a Community Organizer really prepared him for the Presidency. He understands how to listen to people and not only listen but he finds ways to help them.

I'll have to check out Team of Rivals, although I do know a little about the book from interviews. I realize that it suggests working with everyone i.e. rethuglicons, however, I have a hard time with that myself as I do not trust them. I have seen too often how they play ball, and they are not trustworthy, IMHO.

11. well, the book delves into Lincoln's life, and way of thinking
also goes deeply into the mind set of the times, the various factions and their way of thinking/framing the issues...How Lincoln bridged the gaps.... and I'm not getting at this point that he insisted on working with everyone, if they were dishonest backstabbers.... I think he was a master at reaching out and at not taking slights personally. But I havent' gotten to a spot yet where (if) there's the parallel of truly malevolent groups.

12. Robert Gates comes to mind, after all he worked for both Bush "Mis"Admins
Head of CIA under Poppy and now Head of DOD. I certainly would think there are other capable people out there to head the DOD.

15. Wiki's bio on Gates
Director of Central Intelligence: Gates while Director of Central Intelligence.

Gates was nominated to become the Director of Central Intelligence (head of the CIA) in early 1987. He withdrew his name after it became clear the Senate would reject the nomination due to controversy about his role in the Iran-Contra affair.

Gates was Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs from March until August 1989, and was Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Adviser from August 1989 until November 1991.

Gates was nominated (for the second time) for the position of Director of Central Intelligence by President George H. W. Bush on May 14, 1991, confirmed by the Senate on November 5, and sworn in on November 6, becoming the only career officer in the CIA's history (as of 2005) to rise from entry-level employee to Director.

Deputy Directors during his tenure were Richard J. Kerr (from November 6, 1991 until March 2, 1992) and Adm. William O. Studeman (from April 9, 1992 through the remainder of Dr. Gates' tenure). He served until 1993.

The final report of the Independent Counsel for Iran/Contra Matters, issued on August 4, 1993, said that Gates "was close to many figures who played significant roles in the Iran/contra affair and was in a position to have known of their activities. The evidence developed by Independent Counsel did not warrant indictment..."

Level of involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal

Because of his senior status in the CIA, Gates was close to many figures who played significant roles in the Iran-Contra Affair and was in a position to have known of their activities. In 1984, as deputy director of CIA, Gates advocated that the U.S. initiate a bombing campaign against Nicaragua and that the U.S. do everything in its power short of direct military invasion of the country to remove the Sandinista government . The evidence developed by Independent Counsel did not warrant indictment of Gates for his Iran-Contra activities or his responses to official inquiries.

Gates was an early subject of Independent Counsel's investigation, but the investigation of Gates intensified in the spring of 1991 as part of a larger inquiry into the Iran/contra activities of CIA officials. This investigation received an additional impetus in May 1991, when President George H.W. Bush nominated Gates to be Director of Central Intelligence (DCI). The chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) requested, in a letter to the Independent Counsel on May 15, 1991, any information that would “significantly bear on the fitness” of Gates for the CIA post.

Gates consistently testified that he first heard on October 1, 1986, from Charles E. Allen, the national intelligence officer who was closest to the Iran initiative, that proceeds from the Iran arms sales may have been diverted to support the Contras. Other evidence proves, however, that Gates received a report on the diversion during the summer of 1986 from DDI Richard Kerr. The issue was whether the Independent Counsel could prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Gates was deliberately not telling the truth when he later claimed not to have remembered any reference to the diversion before meeting with Allen in October.

Grand Jury secrecy rules hampered Independent Counsel's response. Nevertheless, in order to answer questions about Gates' prior testimony, Independent Counsel accelerated his investigation of Gates in the summer of 1991. This investigation was substantially completed by September 3, 1991, at which time Independent Counsel determined that Gates' Iran-Contra activities and testimony did not warrant prosecution.

Independent Counsel made this decision subject to developments that could have warranted reopening his inquiry, including testimony by Clair E. George, the CIA's former deputy director for operations. At the time Independent Counsel reached this decision, the possibility remained that George could have provided information warranting reconsideration of Gates's status in the investigation. George refused to cooperate with Independent Counsel and was indicted on September 19, 1991. George subpoenaed Gates to testify as a defense witness at George's first trial in the summer of 1994, but Gates was never called.

A lot of the convicted Iran Contra Criminals were pardoned by GHW (Poppy) Bush before he left office.

Anyway I have never trusted anyone connected so closely with any of the BFEE.
