John Dee - British mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer
and alchemist....................

Dee was a noted British mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, and consultant to Queen Elizabeth I. He devoted much of his life to alchemy, divination, and Hermetic philosophy. Dee straddled the worlds of science and magic. One of the most learned men of his time, he had lectured to crowded halls at the University of Paris when still in his early twenties. He was an ardent promoter of mathematics, a respected astronomer and a leading expert in navigation, having trained many of those who would conduct England's voyages of discovery. Monday, 4 July 2005

Sir Isaac Newton, like many scientists at the time, also dabbled in alchemy. Now his notes on this ancient notion of turning base metals into gold and silver have resurfaced.

Notes by the 17th century UK mathematician, physicist and astronomer Sir Isaac Newton, which scientists thought had been lost, have been found.

The notes on alchemy were originally discovered after Newton's death in 1727 but were lost after they were sold at auction in July 1936 for £15 (A$32).

They were found while researchers were cataloguing manuscripts at the Royal Society, the UK's academy of leading scientists...cont'd

"This is a hugely exciting find for Newton scholars and for historians of science in general," says Dr John Young, of London's Imperial College Newton Project.....cont'd
