Next round of war-zone deployments announced

The Air Force has announced the start of a new round of air expeditionary force rotations — Cycle 7 in Air Force terms.

The new AEF schedule began Jan. 1 and will continue through August 2009.

The 20-month schedule is divided into five four-month deployment rotations. The first rotation of Cycle 7 is set to end April 30.

But those months and dates are soft — more a guideline than a rule, said Col. Bob Lala, deputy director of operations for the Air Force Personnel Center office, which manages much of the AEF system. Some airmen headed out in the fall — several months early — to fill Cycle 7 positions, while some airmen leaving Central Command at the end of their Cycle 6 assignment won’t catch a flight home until February or March.

But if there is one thing Air Force officials have learned since the start of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2001, it is to not make specific promises about deployments other than that there will be deployments.
