AFN Franconia signs off with little fanfare after 28 years on air

WÜRZBURG, Germany — After almost three decades of local broadcasting, American Forces Network Franconia signed off for the last time Friday with little fanfare.

“For all of us that have served at … AFN Franconia, it’s been an honor and a privilege to serve you, our audience,” said Sgt. Ian Camejo, as he ended the station’s final morning radio show.

The station, formerly known as AFN Würzburg, officially came on line in 1980, broadcasting a repeated AM signal from Nuremberg throughout the decade. By 1992, FM transmissions were flowing.

In 1994, former members of AFN Berlin, including electronic technician Peter Bordbeck, were brought in to start producing local programming on Leighton Barracks.

“It was a nice time, but I’m glad it’s done,” Bordbeck said, adding that since he’s close to retirement, he’s looking forward to more time with his wife. “I hope the (remaining) time runs quick.”
