GREENWOOD, Ind. — The body of an Indiana Marine found dead at Camp Pendleton was brought back to his grieving and frustrated family this weekend.

Lance Cpl. Johnathon Goffred, 22, was found dead in his barracks at the base on Jan. 28. Military officials have not said how he died, only that they were investigating.

“He always had a smile, a kind word, a heck of a tease,” Goffred’s grandfather, Walter Sparrow, said Saturday, as the Marine’s flag-draped coffin arrived in Greenwood, Ind. “The past two or three days, certainly today, have been the hardest.”

Goffred, who joined the Marines in June 2005, returned from Iraq last year and was scheduled to redeploy later this year. He had 18 brothers and sisters, his family said.

Sparrow said his grandson loved being a Marine.
