PHOENIX — An official says an Air Force F-16 fighter jet intercepted a small plane flying near the site of Sunday’s Super Bowl game and escorted the pilot to an airport in nearby Buckeye.

Buckeye police spokesman Bob Bushner said the Cessna 172 left Tucson for Buckeye and the pilot wasn’t aware that he had entered the temporary no-fly zone around University of Phoenix stadium in Glendale.

The F-16 was joined by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Black Hawk helicopter.

Bushner says the pilot was questioned after he landed and wasn’t cited or arrested.

“I’m sure he was frightened,” Bushner said.
