YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Thirty-two U.S. soldiers from 21 countries became American citizens during a naturalization ceremony Friday at Yongsan Garrison.

Guest speaker Maj. Gen Johnny Weida, deputy chief of staff for the United Nations Command, said he was thrilled when he was offered the opportunity to speak at the event, saying it was different from the promotion and retirement ceremonies he’s often asked to attend.

“When I was first asked to do this, I jumped at the chance,” he said to the assembled citizenship candidates.

He told the candidates how proud he was of their service to their adopted country.

“It was an accident for me to be born a citizen of the United States. You chose to be citizens of the United States,” Weida said. “It’s the land of the free because it’s the home of the brave — you.”
