Hispanic Military Leaders Suggest Recruiting Undocumented Youth

WASHINGTON, D.C -- Latino military personnel are recommending the open recruitment of undocumented immigrants, writes Hispanic Link’s Craig Trimbach, giving them a chance to serve the country and a pathway to citizenship. Although many undocumented immigrants are already in the military, they are either not asked about their immigration status or have shown false paperwork in order to join. Former army secretary Louis Caldera said Latinos' talent is critical to the success of the U.S. Army. Prior to 2005, the military was actively recruiting Latinos, but recently efforts have lagged. Experts cite a disinclination to go to war and language barriers as possible reasons.
