Helo squadron CO fired for ‘loss of confidence’

Cmdr. Douglas A. Malin was fired Feb. 8 as commander of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light 40 for “loss of confidence” in his ability to command, according to a Navy statement. Here, Malin transits the Suez Canal in July 2006 while serving as air boss for the amphibious assault ship Iwo Jima.

NORFOLK, Va. — A Mayport, Fla.-based helicopter squadron commanding officer was fired for “loss of confidence” in his ability to command on Friday, according to a Navy statement.

Cmdr. Douglas A. Malin, former skipper of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron Light 40, went to admiral’s mast Friday before Naval Air Force Atlantic commander Rear Adm. John Goodwin and Capt. Glenn Doyle, commander of Helicopter Maritime Strike Wing Atlantic, said AirLant spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Dave Nunnally.

Doyle cited a “loss of confidence” in Malin’s ability to command as the reason for the relief. His next assignment has not been determined, according to Nunnally.

Malin has been a naval aviator since 1988. In 1999, he was named HSL 42’s pilot of the year and won the Rear Adm. Allen G. Paulson award for exceptional leadership, according to his biography on HSL 40’s Web site.

Cmdr. Barry Taylor, former chief of staff for the wing, is now in command of the squadron.
