BERKELEY, Calif. — City council members are considering softening their stand toward the Marines after drawing widespread criticism for putting out the unwelcome mat.

Scores of people on both sides of the issue were expected to show up to see the council revisit the question Tuesday.

In late January, council members voted to send a letter to a downtown recruiting station advising the Marines that they were not welcome and, if they chose to stay, they would be doing so as “uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”

That drew a deluge of disapproval nationwide, including threats from Congress and a state lawmaker to cut off state and federal funds destined for Berkeley.

On Tuesday, the council was scheduled to consider a second resolution put forward by two council members that would rescind the letter and draw a line between opposing the war in Iraq and “our respect and support for those serving in the armed forces.”
