CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — Prosecutors in the case of a former Cannon Air Force Base airman accused of killing his wife were set Monday to rebut his defense’s argument that the woman died of natural causes.

The defense rested its case last week in the trial of Edward Novak II, who is charged with the October 2004 murder of his 20-year-old wife, Kimberly. She died in the military housing unit she shared with her husband and infant daughter.

Edward Novak, a former member of the 27th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, has been dishonorably discharged from the military. He faces life in prison, if convicted.

Harry Bonnell, a forensic pathologist from San Diego, testified last week that Kimberly Novak died from a rare viral infection called microcarditus.

Bonnell testified that he examined Kimberly Novak’s lung and heart tissue and found evidence of inflammation and muscle degeneration consistent with a viral infection.
