Landstuhl mayor shows city’s sights to wounded

LANDSTUHL, Germany — Landstuhl Mayor Klaus Grumer played host to wounded troops Friday at the city’s Rathaus and offered them a welcome, a history lesson, some humor and a beer stein.

Also during their tour of the city, the five wounded soldiers from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s medical transient detachment got a free guided tour of Burg Nanstein, an ancient castle overlooking the city.

The trip was the first to Landstuhl as part of the hospital’s spiritual fitness retreats for troops from downrange suffering from less-severe injuries.

Two or sometimes three times a week, the “walking wounded” can go on tours of nearby cities and sites.

On Friday, the mayor told the small group about Franz von Sickingen, a knight from Landstuhl who lived from 1481 to 1523.
