SEOUL — Atmospheric yellow dust had some members of the U.S. Forces Korea community seeing blue Tuesday.
Dust levels spiked in the northern and central parts of the peninsula, causing USFK authorities to issue a “Blue Watch” advisory, the third-highest of the command’s five warning levels.
According to 18th Medical Command preventive medicine consultant Lt. Col. Eric Lund, the spike marked the beginning of the annual dust season, which usually peaks in April. He said that for the past 10 years, South Korea has averaged about 12 yellow dust storms a year.
“It’s a small bump, but it’s the first Asian dust day in 2008,” he said.
Lund said levels peaked just before noon Tuesday and were expected to disperse by later in the afternoon.
