MUSKOGEE, Okla. — A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder of an eight-year Army veteran, a city cab driver.

Jason Lamont Jackson also pleaded guilty Monday in Muskogee County District Court to robbery with a firearm. District Attorney Larry Moore said Jackson’s plea, which came in exchange for a life sentence, allowed him to avoid a possible death penalty.

Jackson acknowledged killing Robert Lawson, 38, on the night of July 31, 2005. Jackson shot Lawson twice in the head and stole $35 in cash from Lawson’s shirt pocket.

Jackson will be almost 70 before he will be eligible for parole, Moore said.

“Nobody won,” said Lawson’s father, James Lawson of Muldrow. “But justice has been served.”
