Air Force officials have identified another issue at Kirkuk Regional Air Base in Iraq: Not enough service members are golfing.
So, according to an Air Force press release, base officials will start offering monthly tournaments at the base’s nine-hole course, starting Sunday. More than 70 participants are expected, the release said.
The course is all dirt and rocks, and the longest hole is 135 yards, forcing duffers to rely on their chipping game.
“Depending on their skill level, I’ve seen golfers use 7 or 8-iron clubs,” said Capt. James Spoo, 506th Air Expeditionary Group munitions storage area officer and golf course caretaker.
The push for more use of the course coincides with the arrival of several more clubs, donated by the father of Lt. Col. Kenneth Pruitt, commander of the 506th Expeditionary Communications Squadron. The clubs were unclaimed at the Alabama country club where Pruitt’s father works, and include sets for lefties.
